Make Bathroom . [Attractive {One Bath Should Be { On the First Floor } By PAUL T. HAAGEN i Noted Architect 5 (144b In a Series.) : {EVERY FAMILY WANTS to { have the bathroom accessible from { the bedrooms ani it is alway: ad- § visable to build two baths into every home. Where -there is only one bathe room, the location becomes a | problem in the heuse which has bedrooms on both the first { and second tloors. It means that ithe stairs must be place con- { veniently and inconspicuously. i If two bathrooms are installed “1 in this type of house, it is almost nlways best to have one of them on the first floor where it may be { nccessible for the use of guests, i children or invalids. If two baths are installed, one {may very well be a smaller bath{room and by using a shower in [a of a tub, space may be saved. | A basement toilet is desirable, : providing service for household i help and for the children when § playing out-of-doors, thus rele- ! gating soiled shoes and hands to . the basement, 4 wn 8 ‘WHERE THE bathrooms can be { planned -or grouped so that the { plumbing supplies: can be utilized i for both kitchen and baths and perhaps the laundry as well, a worth-while saving is made and ‘the cost of an extra bath re- : duced. ey : Do not place a bath tub under ‘8 window unless you have to. You twill find it most inconvenient in i that location.’ Drafts and dirt find ‘their way through the window and {any window curtains may become {damp and wet. ¢ Provide electric outlets for shav‘ing and ample light on mirrors fand general illumination, It is {well to have an electric wall heater built into the bathroom to pro‘vide heat in mildly inclement i weather. : = h » » » AMONG some of the items wanted by many folks in their "bathrooms are cabinets or drawers for the storing of bathroom linen .and supplies, a built-in dressing table (much appreciated by the women) and space for a scale, * Sun lamps will play an ime ‘portant part in the future life ,of our people and if placed in a large bathroom together with ‘8 comfortable seat, would be +found advantageous. Well-lighted mirrors are =a must, and ventilation is required. Possibly a ventilating fan might be installed which would exhaust the air from the bath to the outside.
» » » BUILT-IN accessories such as medicine cabinets, soap dishes, . tooth brush holders, cup holders, ‘towel racks, tollet paper holders, ‘etc, are not expensive and -add {very much to the convenience ‘and attractiveness of a modern * bathroom, &~ Whatever may be the make-up of your bathroom or its. equip-’ ment, everything should be of easy-to-clean materials with erack-proof walls and floors and ‘all sanitary devices.

My Day— French Award To Be Placed | In Library
By ELEANOR ROOSEVELT HYDE PARK, N. Y., July 17+ Sometime ago I was notified that on the 14th of July, France's Bastile day, French Ambassador Henri Bonnet would present to me the medaille militaire awarded posthumously to my husband for his part in the liberation of France. So Monday I went to Washington for the occas sion. 1 The award of thé medaille militaire is a very great honor which I know ‘my husband would have deeply appreciated. Many of his friends came fo the ceremony so it was a heart-warming occasion. I shall now place this decoration in the library at Hyde Park, which already has so many treasures which he would have been.glad that people in different parts of the world wished to give him.
