{Council Ignores - \Lottery Racket
Increases Cab Permits :
From 420-445
City council last night maintained a “do nothing" attitude toward the city’s $9 million a year lottery racket. The fact that the city legal department held that an ordinance to ban manufacture or possession of pool tickets would be legal and enforceable failed to impress councilmen.
Word that the Church Federation of Indianapolis voted unanimously to support an anti-lottery went unnoticed in the shuffle of council’ business.
However, the council did follow Mayor Tyndall's recommendation that the number of taxicab permits in Indianapolis be increased from 420 to 445. Would Transfer Funds Acquisition of money to purchase $80,000 worth of new street cleaning equipment moved a step nearer at last night's meeting with introduction of a number of ordinances transferring funds out of other departments into the street commissioner's department. This action resulted after Carl Dortch, Indianapolis chamber of commerce financial expert, opposed issuance of bonds to buy the new equipment on the ground it would be foolish to issue long term bonds for rolling stock which would wear out in a few years time. Another measure introduced in the council would ban parking from the edge of the Mile Square to the east-west city limits on Washington st. The legislation is aimed at reducing rush hour confusion on the city's main east-west artery. ’ : Expect Quick Approval The council also is expected to give quick approval to a measure setting the salaries of the new sanitation board. Salaries recommended are $3300 for the president and $2400 for board members. A number of North side residents were present in an effort to stop construction of a new automobile salesroom -&t- 39th and Illinols st. {by Walter Hiser. ..Councilmen vated.8 to 3 in favor of stopping the project but seven _|votes, or a three-fourths majority, was necessary. The council took under advisement a recommendation by City Councilman William Brown that the city plan commission submit a report setting forth reasons for delay in plans to construct-thuitiple level
