Hot- Weather “Care for Babies * All Food and Water Must Be Cold, Clean
By JANE STAFFORD Science Services Staff Writer BABIES NEED special care In hot weather, They cannot adapt themselves to heat as well as grown-ups can. They should wear very light clothing but must be protected from drafts and from chilling at night. An extra sponge bath at bedtime will be worth the trouble to mother in the comfort it gives baby. When he is made comfort able he is more likely to drop off to sleep witheut fretting and crying. Mothers of young “bables. no longer dread the summer because of its threat to baby's life. The reason is because they have learned to guard against the germs which killed so many babies of an earlier generation in summer, the deaths being ascribed to “summer come plaint” or “summer diarrhea.” » ” r THEY KNOW that baby's food and drinking water must be kept cold and clean and protected from flies or other insects that can carry disease germs. Development of pure water and milk supplies have been an enor mous ald for mothess and babies living in the cities. In the country, mothers themselves may have to take measures to insure the purity of water and milk for baby. » » » THE STATE or other health department can give advice as to the safety of a particular well or other water supply, If there is any doubt about it, however, for example, when traveling with a baby, the water should be boiled. For very small babies, many doctors recommend boiling the drinking water anyway. The mother who nurses her baby ‘ean be sure that she is giving him germ-free milk. For babies who do not get breast milk, canned milk is ‘advised by many doctors ‘because, ‘sipong- other. advantages; it #80

How to Build— | Construction -
Must Be Good In Building
Costs Are Too High To Neglect Needs
(Seventh of a Series)
By PAUL-T. HAAGEN Noted Architect USUALLY when a man plans a home he builds as large a house as his money will buy—and he wants all the appliances, equipment and conveniences built into that house. je The total sum he has to invest seems rather adequate to him, and
dhe feels it will
all these Such is the
cover things. not always case, With consider, money he has will go only so far and many times it is a difficult task to determine the Paul T. Haagen things absolutely required as disunguished from what is wanted. Too often good construction is slighted for the gadgets that may be installed later, » » ~ THE IMPORTANT thing to remember is that well-built masonry walls and footings, sturdy frame construction, sound and attractive doors, a first-class paint- job, a good plumbing and heating installation and better electric wiring will pay large dividends over the years to come, Bo let's start with the basic foundation, the footings that real-
1 ly. support the house. Footings are
the masonry base on which the house is built, They should be of poured concrete, wide enough to support adequately the weight of walls, floor and roof. The bottom of the - footings should be level and rest on good sqlid soil or sand and below the frost line of the section An which the house is built, Foundation walls should be well built solid masonry of pouréd “corcrete, ‘conerete blocks or brick, well water-proofed on the exterior surface to hold back moisture,
~ ” » BASEMENT floors are best of concrete about four inches thick, well drained and laid on a cinder bed. By all means have any supporting posts in the basement of steel, - with - the proper sized beams to support the first floor joists, Steel is economical in the construction and the life of your house will be longer, with the consequence of less plaster cracking and settling, The true test of a well-built house is the fundamentals hidden within the walls and out of sight. There is always a temptation to economize here, but it is poor economy ‘to put in inferior construction in these concealed places. Far better .to forego temporarily some of the “mechanical helps, appliances or decorative effects, and put the money into sound basic: Iaterimisaiig foun--dations. This will minimize repairs and upkeep. The other requirements may be supplied later when finances permit, and it will pay in the long run to operate on this basis.

» F. M, ALDRIDGE, 4277 W. 12th st., and ‘his neighbor, F. E. Rice, expressed the gardener’s lament
of 1947 the other morning when I talked to them. “If we could only have planted our gardens sooner. Other years we're eéating a lot out of ‘the garden by this time, but not this season.” . Mr. Rice planted part of his plot to muskmelons just to help keep the weeds down. (It's a little late to start them now but Acorn squash will smother out a lot of weeds, produce food in a little over two months, ‘Then soy beans, either edible or field variety, will not only crowd out weeds but enrich your soil for next year, too.) Here's a pointer for beginners. Mr. Rice said he's certainly learned it doesn't do to work around bushbeans when they“re . in- bloom. If you knock ‘those blossoms off—no beans. That goes for cultivation; too, if you cut off their shallow roofs... The plant reacts by dropping its blossoms. Again—no beans. . » » FRESH -gathered seed germinates with the vitality of all young things, Gather the seed maturing on your chives or parsley now, plant. it right away. » » " NICE thought for a really hot day. To develop a slick looking privet hedge, clip it every other week. So says J. B. Longest, 3807 E. 14th st. He ought.to know. His hedge is a beauty, measuring over seven feet across its level green top. “The longer you let the clipping g0, the harder it is to do,” he says. Frequent clipping keeps the poor plants hopefully putting out new wings to grow a solid wall.
If you clip a hedge slightly narrower at top than at the base, lights gets in to develop good lower branches. Of course, if you're looking for something really easy, you'll just plant bush honeysuckle, forsythia, or -even spires — trim them once a year, and rock on the front porch the rest of the summer, Mr, Longest, who's nearly 80, has. so much energy even constant hedge trimming can’t use it all up. So he has a big vegetable garden, too, and not a weed ‘= it.
