Make Their

Entrance

And Prove the Hem Is Really Descending By LOUISE FLETCHER Times Woman's Editor JULY 4, just three days behind us, has always been the signal which starts the plugging of fall fashions. The same thing is happening this year. The other day, down at Wasson’s, they were lifting some new fall

suits from the wrappings in which| they'd been shipped. The suits were

pretty enough to make anyone wish the dog days would whoosh by on the double. They also were an indication that the fashion people are not fooling about that longer skirt business.

Two of the early arrivals (pictured |

at right) have definitely longer skirts. Both of the suits shown are developed in striped materials, too Forstmann fabric in each instance, and each depending upon manipulation of \ the stripes to achieve smart effects. The rose-and-gray Malter design also features a longer torso jacket, and emphasizes the Jong-bodied

effect by a row of buttons leading

up to high“ revers and collar.’ »

The second suit is a three-piece |

number with a back-dipping bolero topping a skirt made with a highwaisted jersey cummerbund in red and blue. The three-quarter coat rounding out the trio has swing-back fullness to contrast with the reed slim lines of the skirt.

Some Ways to Fake

Longer Hemlines Speaking of longer skirts, the problem of how to achieve them in garments already on hand may seem a puzzler, oN Some tailors shake a dubious head when asked to let down a hemline. They say it can come down, all right, but that there frequently "will remain a telltale line. This comes from the repeated pressings of the older garment, and sometimes from wear on the gare ment's edge. Don’t worry too much about it. Try: some optical illusion tricks thought up by the fashion-wise in New York. If it's a plain-toned wool or crepe for which greater length is desired, trot down to the ribbon counters and buy some inch or inch-and-a-half grosgrain ribbon that matches the frock exactly. Get enough to go clear around the skirt and catch it to the'underside. of the hem, letting it extend down petticoat-wise. The same trick may be used on wash dresses, substituting a ruffle of eyelet embroidery for the petticoat effect. Lots of the summer frocks are being made with petticoat ruffles. Another idea, particularly good for a two-piece costume or suit, is to buy some matching material and make a skirt-yoke of sufficient depth to lower the hemline.

Fold in remaining % cup sugar with the wire whip, adding about two tablespoons at a time. Now add the flour-sugar mixture in the same manner, cutting and folding while rotating the bowl slowly. When flour has all disappeared, continue cutting and folding one minute longer. Divide mixture gently into two equal parts, Fold vanilla into one portion and into the other fold the egg yolks which have been beaten with the orange extract until very thick and lightcolored. Now dip the two batters into a nine-inch ungreased tube cake pan, alternating a spoonful of the white batter with a spoonful of the yellow until it is all used. Bake in a slow oven (275 degrees F.) for 30 minutes, then in a moderately slow oven (325 degrees F.) for 50 minutes. Invert pan so it stands on tube and does not rest on cake and allow to cool thoroughly. Loosen sides and around tube with a sharp knife and remove cake from pan. New Gadgets For Papa's Vacation

By KAY SHERWOOD ; NEA Staff Writer NEW YORK, July “7.~New gadgets designed to intrigue men tackle masculine problems with practical, no-nonsense directness. Because of their featherweight lightness, efficiency or small-scaled size, many new accessories will rate preferred positions in his luggage. Rainy day protection for fishermen, for example, which adds only 12 ounces to his gear, is offered by voluminous “shirt” and hat made f waterproof fortisan. What proves the garment's prac« ticality are the roomy shoulders of the shirt, which allow the caster free swing, Drawstring fastened cuffs and

A small minnow slipped into the plastic shell is magnified to table d’hote size for the unsuspecting fish, . Two triple hooks are attached to the casing, Holes in both ends of the plug permit water to rush

through, thus keeping a minnow alive and alluring—for days, the manufacturers claim, A streamlined aluminum pipe lighter - promises to replace the bulky bundles of matches in the pipe smoker's pocket.
