Henry, a short, gentle-appearing man, picked up a brief case and moved toward, the courtroom door. “We are not guilty,” he said in a well-controlled voice. “We will be vindicated.” It was an anonymous penciled note which ‘set in" motion the investiga- _ tion which led to the trial. The investigation took almost two | years. The actual trial—excluding jury deliberations — lasted - from April 22 to July 2. This was 47 court days. "Bore No Signature

The senate war investigating committee received a penciled note! shortly after the war ended. suggested that the committee look| into the affairs of the Garsson mu"nitions business. It bore no signature. The committee ‘nauiry got underway officially on Sept. 15, 1945, May and the Garssons and Joseph PF, Freeman, the Garssons’ Washington representative, were indicted by a grand jury on Jan. 23, 1947. Freeman was ordered acquitted by Judge Schweinhaut becatise the government failed to establish a prima facie case against him. The major issues in the case revolved about the Cumberland Lumber Ce. and a 2100-acre tract of timberland near Whitesburg, . Ky., in May's congressional district. The government charged that the firm and the land were merely cloaks to funnel more than $53,000 in bribes from the Garssons’ to May, 1043. ‘ The government contended there had been earlier payments, that the Garssons had been. paying May's personal debts since 1941, but it stressed the Cumberland operations as the main issue in the “case.
