actual combat. : |

One of them is whether the pilots {of two combat planes approaching {each other at only 500 miles per hour can even see each other, let alone fight. And at supersonic speeds of more than 700 miles per! hour, the problem becomes greater. | If the two plidis srivaling 44 shel speeds can see each other, the scien tte say, there is still the question 'of whether they can react fest enough to push a button and fire | thelr guns before they are separated ‘by miles of sky.

Research Co-ordinated

There is also the problem, the ex- | perts state, of whether pilots could | distinguish friend from foe at those ‘speeds. The school of aviation med|icine at Randolph Field, Tex, is | working on that one. The AAP is co-ordinating its research with the navy, civilian industry. the Canadians and the British. | The AAFP said it is ready to fly a | man at supersonic speed provided {they can get him up to the super- | sonic speed without injury and then { get him down. But they admit there isa tremendous amount of research that must ‘be done before they can turn their experimental supersonic sp the Bell XS-1, into a fighter

5 Castaways Live 6 Weeks on Reef

SAN’ DIEGO, Cal, June 30 (U. P.).—Fragmentary radio messages to the. U.. S. coast guard station told today how five shipwrecked fishermen lived for six weeks on bleak Clipperton island, off Mexico. The men, all of San Pedro, Cal, were reported uninjured and in good condition. They were picked up Saturday by the fishing boat Normandie, which was instructed by the navy's Panama sea frontier to take them to Galapggos island, off Ecuador. The navy will bring them home from there. They were crew members of the 45-foot fishing boat Thistle, out of Terminal island, Cal. The craft reportedly smashed up ‘on the rocky Clipperton coast on May 18. Radio messages to the navy and coast gave no details of how the men lived while on the island but said only that they managed to

{keep “in good condition.”

Clipperton is a five-mile dot in

{the Pacific, is uninhabited. Rain was believed to be its only source

That way, they could buy a drink| whenever they wanted, without vio- | lating Idaho's new “liquor-by-the-| drink” law. Since repeal, liquor has | been sold in Idaho only by the bottle. The new law, effective tomorrow, says that liquor can be sold by the glass, but only within the limits of incorporated cities and villages. So Owyhee county cattle raisers want to create a “village” out of a T7000 square mile area filled with, nothing but wide open space. If the plan goes through, it will be the world’s biggest village, and it will cover some of the most | rugged country in the U. S. There were some objections to the plan. The night marshal would have a rough time patrolling his badland beat. He would find it lonesome, too, because the area's 4000 inhabifants are spread out at a ratio of half an inhabitant per square mile.
