They were Rex Mays, Los Angeles, who won the 100-mile runs at Langhorne, Milwaukee and Indianapolis fair grounds; Tony Betterhausen, Chicago, who won at Goshen, N. Y,, and George Connor, Los Angeles,, who copped’ the Atlanta century. Holland, second at Indianapolis, Walt Brown, Massapequa, L. I. seventh place winner, and Duke Dinsmore, Osborne, O, and Billy Devore, Indianapolis, who divided 10th place money, and Ted Horn, Paterson, N. J, 1846 dirt track king, were among the top-heavy favorites to qualify.
