Kurowski, Elliott in Close Race for All-Star Berth

CHICAGO, June 19 (U. P.).— With the closing date still one week off, most of the positions in the all-star baseball game appeared to be reached already today. The stellar National and Ameriean league teams will stage the|Y annual all-star A battle here at Wrigley field July 8. Leaders for positions in the startfng lineups held such heavy totals today that it seemed impossible for any of the lesser lights to catch them, The only close race for a position was for third base on the National league team where Whitey Kurowski of 8t. Louis and Bob Elliott of Boston have passed the leadership back and forth for several days. Today's tabulation gave Kurowski fthe lead with 71,248 to Elliott's 67,624. A close race also was being run for the honor of gathering the greatest number of votes in the poll. Lou Boudreau, shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, was the current leader for most popular player. He held 124,364 votes to 123,142 for Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees and 121,403 for Ted Williams of Boston, Ledgers for positions:

Leahy will be assisted by collegiate coaches from the far west, south and east, whose appoint-

career in a drizzle at Cincinnati last night when he stopped the slugging Boston Braves without a single bingle for a 6-to-0 victory.

For as it was in 1938 when Vandernieer electrified the sports world by pitching two no-hitters in a row for the first time in history, his initial victims were the Braves, In his next start he faced and nohitted the Dodgers. And Blackwell is due to start next against the Dodgers on Sunday, It was the first no-hitter in the majors since another of baseball's Ohio pitching masters, Bobby Feller turned one in against the Yankees on April 30 of last season.
