} PLease, otnithologists, don't i take us too seriously. We assume that all of this world’s fnhabitants, feathered and otherp wise, need a sip of water now and fi then, but if by chance some mem- : ber of the Royal Order of Strigiformes (owls, that is) does not imbibe—well, read on,

<n

THE OWLS we mean are *“night owls” —genus homo—who toil or play from twilight through the shank of the evening. “Owl” . cars and buses cater to these noctors turnal wayfarers. All-night restaurants satisfy their appetites. We—we meet «their needs for

water. ¢

<= On ? THE WATER INDUSTRY— gs other public utilities—isn't like the more ordinary businesses where the doors close at five o'clock or so in the afternoon, to reopen the following workday.

rea

DAY water service is taken for granted in this day, age, and— need we add, city. That is as'it should be. Water demands of city life make it necessary. Coverings 4 oe : : FOR INSTANCE, fires never

give advance warning. There.’

fore, fire hydrants must have water constantly available for fire-fighting forces. (Night owls may have observed also the big street flushing tank”trucks replenishing their water supply at these same hydrants.)

<r. Oe

WATER USAGE naturally is fess during the fate night hours.

OWLS NEED WATER, T00!

Residential needs are practically nil. Industrial plants are not as completely on the day-and-night basis as they were during the war. Nevertheless, the average MINIMUM demand for water is only about one-third less than the average maximum demand on a normal day, =x <> THE MINIMUM DEMAND falls between the hours of three and five o'clock in the morning. Last month, May, that demand was at the rate of 38,000,000 gale lons per day. The maximum dé mand, except during the lawn sprinkling season, comes usually between ten and eleven o’clock in the morning and runs about 65,« 000,000 gallons per day. In the sprinkling season, however, the maximum use comes usually be« tween seven and eight in the eve« ning, and runs at as high a rate as 123,000,000 gallons per day! Thé average daily pumpage for May, 1947, was 49,100,000 gal. lons. (In May, 1940, the maxi. mum day was 34,470,000 gallons!’

S0, YOU SEE, the water must be kept flowing. The filters must | be kept operating, the chlorinators in action. Boilers must be kept stoked, pumps and turbines constantly ready to meet de mands for pressure. Men are on. duty, too, in the Distribution Department to take care of emergency calls (LI 9110) from cus tomers. <> =

AND if you get.a sudden yen to pay your water bill at three o'clock in the morning, you'll find a night payment box at the top of the steps leading into the Main Office on Monument Circle. Pardon the commercial, folks,
