As Final Round Starts

Fred Wampler Wins Backing by Shooting 69 On Second Lap of Tourney af Broadmoor

By J. E. O'BRIEN The B4-hole record of 216 for the Indianapolis District golf tournament was in danger of being eclipsed by nightfall as a handful of title shooters stroked over the soggy Speedway premises today.

John David, state amateur champion, was the man to beat as the |. third round of the neighborhood competition. | And if he was to be beaten, it would have to be done by one of seven

| Another contender appeared at’ dusk in the person of Bob Schu-|:

during the afternoon indicated that the final lap of the annual tournament would be a wet one. At least half the field, however, already had experienced swinging in the rain yesterday at Broadmoor. * Escapes Downpour David was one of the few early

_ starters to escape the District's

traditional second-day downpour. He coupled a 35 and 36 for a one-under-par 71 to add to his 73 of the first day's play at Hillcrest. He administered the coup-de-grace to Broadmoor’s par by ramming home a 30-foot putt on the 18th green. But Higgins didn't get co-opera~-tion either from the weatherman or his putter. He had to make most of his tour in the rain, and four three-putt greens hoisted his second day score to 75. Nevertheless, he was still only one stroke behind par for 36 holes. Wampler, playing in the company of his Purdue team mates, fashioned the day's best total at Broadmoor—a three-under-par 60. Never missing the green with his" approaches, he equaled or bettered par on all 18 holes. On Home Course The dazzling 60 took some of the sting out of his 77 of opening day, and he became a favorite with numerous observers since he was shooting his home grounds today it Speedway.

hind David ® when today's round began, he likely would delay any trophy-awarding ceremonies since he was in the last foursome to go out today. Shaw tacked a 74 onto his previous 73 for a 147 total. There was little to choose among the 148 shooters. Petric earned his total with a 75 yesterday: Esple showed consistency by duplicating his firstday 74, and Talbot produced an even-par 72 to go along with his earlier 76. Two other rounds yesterday were worth mentioning, although neither

shooter stood much chance at the|Joh crown. John Hare Jr. of Highland Fores produced a one-over-par 73, while|y

Arnold Koehler, one of Wampler’'s Purdue teammates, battered back nine par for a 34 and a total of

71. Hare, however, had a 150 sum, |D. L. King, Let

and Koehler 154.
