given new virtues to familiar fabrics—wool, silk, cotton and rayon without affecting textile feel or appearance. Vying with these known fabrics for attention are new fibers including glass, plastic and aluminum. Dramatic examples prove that wool fabrics when treated with melamine resins become practically shrink-proof. Resin-treated blankets

No Curtain Stretching .A SIMILAR finishing process puts a permanent, launderable glaze on chintz; gives rayon and cotton wrinkle resistance. Another chemical process out to win the housewife’s vote stabilizes lace curtains so that they may be washed and dried without the use of stretchers. Other textile chemicals—used separately or in combination with those that control shrinkage— make fabrics water repellent, resistant to mildew and "fire retardant. All finishes qualify fabrics for fashion use as well as home decoration. ” Nl »

No More Gas Fading THE BUGABOO of gas-fading of acetate rayans, which streaks and pink-tinges the fabric, is eliminated by a chemical non-resin process, This anti-fade process gives protection through the wash and, in fact, minimizes the shrinkage of rayon fibers. Brilliantly-colored woven plastics, already famed as “easy to clean” fabrics, are shown in noninflammable draperies, upholstery, lampshades and decorative screens for the home. Glass fibers interwoven with cotton or rayon add fire resistance to draperies of beautiful screen-printed designs. The interweaving of non-tarnish-ing aluminum threads in materials makes gleaming drapes as well as fabrics for fashion use which ncver lose their bright sheen, ” # - Keep 'Em Shining KEEP YOUR electrical appliances spotless and shining by wiping them off after each using. Don’t Blame Parents,

Help Them

By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Staff Writer THE MODERN custom of blam-

ing juvenile delinquency and the behavior problems of children on parents is strongly criticized by Samuel Whitman, executive director of the Cleveland Mental Hygiene association. . In a report to The Child, U. 8. children’s bureau publication, he says “sniping at parents” is “thoughtless, -unwarranted and destructive.” The chief trouble with the snipers is they don’t use common sense. They don’t stop to think that, after all, very few parents deliberatély plan to misguide and mistreat their children. " - » IN MOST cases the parents are honestly trying to do the right thing for the children. ‘They usually are not aware of their shortcomings as parents. Pointing out the parents’ mistakes and shortcomings is just as bad as blaming them. It may be dangerous, because it is likely to make them resentful and all the more determined to follow their own ideas. Very often the trouble with Johnny has its roots in the way his parents were handled by their parents. But you could carry that blaming the parents right back to Adam and Eve without accomplishing anything, Mr. Whitman points out. ® » |» BE A GOOD neighbor, is the remedy he suggests. By that he means help the parents of problem children and juvenile delinquents, instead of blaming them. Amateur help and well-meant advice is not enough. But there are child guid‘ance clinics and other agencies that can provide professional advice, Try to get the parents to understand and seek the help these agencies can give. The family doctor can help if parents think to call on him when Johnny gets in trouble because of misbehavior as well as when he has measles. Be a good neighbor to the child, too. Dori’t shut him out of your home, but let him have the example of your own children's way of doing things.

Divide a pillow ful of feathers into three or four cheesecloth bags; the open weave of cheesecloth encourages a free circulation of air, Bags should be large enough to allow for feather expansion. Shake the bags occasionally during the day so that each feather gets a chance at air and sun.

Make Your Roses Last Longer

Roses gathered late in the afternoon keep longer than those cut in the early morning. Plant scientists at the U. 8. agriculture department advise removing the leaves from the lower part of the stem before roses are put in water. . The leaves decay in water and promote growth of bacteria which hasten wilting.
