Walking home at noon, he neatly sidestepped an oncoming tricycle powered by a 5-year-old. The maneuver carried him into the path of another velocipede, manned by a 4-year-old—coming from the opposite direction. Mr. Ellner was taken off to the

Export figures show that Avgetisi tina has been getting an increasing} share of American steel products, This particularly is true since the decontrol of many items and re moval of nation-by-nation quotas several months ago. U. S. authorities can reinstitute a quota on any country which shows a tendency to grab too large a share of the total exportable supply. But no occasion to do this has arisen in Argentina's case, according to officials. Steel Need Universal : Argentina needs steel desperately, as do all South American and most other countries. Outlook Dismal For Mine Peace
WASHINGTON, June 5 (U. P)— The coal mines administration today pushed plans for returning the government-operated soft coal pits to their private owners on June 30. This will be done regardless of whether a new wage contract has been signed by that time with John L. Lewis. A spokesman for the administration said the schedule would not be affected by the dismal prospects for an agreement between Lewis and the two groups of mine oper-. ators. The government's legal authority to hold the mines ends on June 30. Negotiations for a private contract currently are stalemated. Mr. Lewis' United Mine ‘Worekrs (A. F. of L.) ended their bargaining sessions yesterday with southern coal operators and talks with northern and western operators broke off Saturday. In both cases negotiators were far apart on wage issues. Sources close to the union predicted that a coal strike on July 1 was virtually certain for at least some of Lewis’ 40,000 miners.
The plan was put into effect last January, at just about the time the

It provides a vast program of public works and expansion of transportation and shipping. The plan calls for more farm machinery and a hundred other things—all needing steel. money. With a gold reserve that President Peron put at “1500 tons,” and with meat and wheat for export at high prices, Argentina went into the creditor class in a big way after the war. A lot of her ready cash has found its way to the United States. Much of that went to the steel market; according to indications. Argentine government purchasing agents reportedly have been arriving with letters of credit for as much as $13 million. And their steel bids, sometimes made through other South Americans, have provided tough compe-

The committee will open public hearings {June 23 to question businessmen and others personally on the economic outlook. A majority of the §88 persons participating in the poll expressed the belief that production, employ« ment and sales will be lower in the second half of this year than they were in the corresponding 1946 period. There was general agreement that prices on most goods will drop and that wages will increase further.
