WASHINGTON, June 4 (U. P).— Rep. Gerald Landis (R. Ind.) yester~ day introduced legislation to give the government authority to close mines deemed unsafe by federal mine inspectors. The bill would allow the mine management 30 days aor less to correct unsafe conditions. “As a member of the labor committee, I would feel partly responsible if any more mine explosions occur,” Rep. Landis said. The bill, which Rep. Landis outlined to a house labor subcommittee, wouldsbecome effective. when federal ownership of the mines expires July 1, “When the present government cofitract expires, there is no way of _|enforcing safety,” Rep. Landis said. Under his bill, the operator of a closed mine would be given 30 days to correct unsafe conditions.
