UMW Fails to Show At Southern Session
WASHINGTON, Jine 4 (U, P.).— All negotiations for a new wage contract for 400,000 United Mine
coal fields were broken off today. . Representatives of John L. Lewis failed to show up for a scheduled meeting with south: operators. Last week negotiations with the| northern and western operators were called off. With the government preparing to give up operation of the mines on July 1, the breakdown in cone tract talks increased the possibility of a strike under the miners’ traditional “no contract, no work" policy. The Southern operators’ decision to publicize their contract offers to the U. M. W.—in which they elim= inkted portal-to-portal - pay—provoked the final severance of negotiations. The U. M. W. said it couldn't continue secret negotiations for a new contract when the operators were making public their offers. The next move appeared up to the t. Officials were studying the situation, but indicated that any formal intervention may be delayed for possibly two weeks to awit further developments.
Canal Victim's Son To Get Mental Test
Farrell Wheatley Held by Police
Police today held 25-year-old Farrell B. Wheatley, discharged mental patient who was sought after his mother’s body was found in the canal. He was booked on a vagrancy charge pending a mental examination. . He was taken to police headquarters last night by his brother, Kenton P. Wheatley, 27, of 3716 E. New York st. Missing since early Sunday, he was located when he called his brother and arranged to meet him at Riverside amusement park. The body of his mother, Mrs. Charlette V. Wheatley, 52, 1127 Oliver ave. was found in the canal Sunday morning. She was last seen alive Saturday night when she left home to go to a show with Farrell. An autopsy showed death was due to drowning. Brother Asked Search Her older son did not know his mother had drowned until he identified her body Monday. He asked police to hunt his brother after learning ef the tragedy. At that time he reported his brother had visited him early Sunday morning with his clothing wet and his shoes muddy. Mr. Wheatley told police his brother was released from a mental institution in July, 1945. He said he would sign papers to commit his brother for observation in the City hospital psychiatric ward. He said his brother suffered from an “extremely nervous condition” after 40 months in the air force in the
