Tomorrow is the deddline for acceptance of entries in the Indiana A A. U. track and field championships to be held at Tech fleld next Saturday, meet chairman K. Mark Cowen announced today. The meet is under sponsorship of the recreation division of the department of parks: with George Sprague as the director. All entries and entry fees are to be sent to the recreation division, 101 E. 27th st, Indianapolis. A 50cent fee is charged for entrance in each event, The winning team will receive a trophy and there will be individual trophies, medals for second and third ‘places, and ribbons for fourth

Ex-Catcher Dies Of Heart Attack

BRADENTON, Fla, June 3 (U. P) ~Funeral services will be held in Philadelphia - Wednesday for Jimmy Wilson, who reached baseball stardom as catcher on the

Gang and later managed the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs. He died yesterday of a heart attack. ~The 46-year-old ex-manager, who retired from baseball last year to run ‘a fruit and produce business here, was stricken in a restaurant late Saturday night and died early yesterday of a coronary thrombosis. His body will be taken to

New Haven .in the Eastern league, Wilson became first-string catcher of the Phillles in 1923, He was traded to the Cards in 1928 and returned to the Phils as-playing-manager in 1934. He finished his active playing career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1939 and 1940. He appeared in world series with the Cards in 1928, 1930 and 19031, and with the Reds in 1940. In the 1940 world series against Detroit, Wilson, then 40 years old, played in six games as substitute for the injured Ernie Lombardi and batted .363 and executed the series’ only stolen base. His lifetime major league batting average was .284, and he once equalled the major league catchers’ record of 18 putouts in a single game, He became manager of the Chicago Cubs in 1941. He resigned that position in 1944 when the Cubs lost 13 straight games after winning their opening-day contest. He returned to Cincinnati as coach in 1945 and 1946 and then retired from the game.

A state invitational tourney for women at South Grove course on June 17 is expected to attract approximately 100 players. The event will be sponsored by the North Side Women's Golf club.
