Sophie saw a restless girl, imprisoned by the round of farm life and the bitter Maine winters. She saw again the elegant young Adam Bagot who came to arrange the purchase of her father's farm, on the back reaches of the tidal Goose river, for the Codman Company. Generous to a fault even then, Sophie had given her whole heart and her whole self, although she was dimly aware that Adam be- | longed to another world. HER MUSINGS were interrupted by the sound of Marcel .and Sir Charles on the staircase, bringing down the easel and some suiicases. She wondered what on earth they ‘were doing, making all that commotion. Presently Marcel came into the room, muffled in his shawl and wearing the shabby, greenish Russian cape. “Sophie,” he said sadly, “I go only because you think iv is for the best.”
“Hasn't anyone . told you? You can't go now. We're all expected at Mrs. Bagot's for dinner tomorrow night. To celebrate the engagement!” “What?” “Engagement?” said Sir Charles,

Basil moved to the plano, which was now quite badly out of tune after a summer on the seacoast. Seating himself on the bench, he began to play softly the finale from Mozart's Sonata in C. Godfrey was still going on and on, working himself into his part. Adam Bagot, sitting close to Sophie, settled back comfortably, smiling with an expression of fulfillment, and reached out a hand. Sophie patted it. Adam closed his eyes and went to sleep. THE END

The goal is now at least $600 million, earlier estimates of a need for $450 million, made in January when the United Nations general assembly authorized the fund, having had to be revised, The aim is to increase children’s diets by 750 calories & day.
