As Pre-Season Anxiety Damper Is Put On 8 By MARC G. WAGGENER - Two more weeks“and the annual migration of Hoosier anglers will be underway to lakes and streams for a long week-end and the gpening
.@% the fishing season, Locally and over the: state reports indicate one
of the best seasons of recent years with hoth lakes and streams in fine
condition.
Rains through the early spring have brought lake levels up and
have cleaned out the streams which are now generally clear and ripe for fishing.
Nab 16 ‘Grabbers’ Here
*The war on illegal fishing here has netted 16 violators in the past two weeks, all on charges of “grabbing” which Involves the use of a series of hooks on one end of a line which is thrown into the water and’ then jerked back in the hope of hooking a fish, : This type of fishing was popular
“for a time around the Broad Ripple
and Emrichville dams in White river and the Keystone and 21st street dams in Fall creek. For the most part the fish taken by the “grabbing” or “jerking” method were the coarse species—carp, buffalo and shad,
Fishing Hopes High Local anglers are anticipating the opening of the fishing season on the morning of June 16 with high hopes of some record catches. Their appetites were whetted by the fine bluegill and crappie fishing experienced

at the Indianapolis Water Compan lake earlier thi¥ month. . On the last day of the extended open season for panfish, one conservation officer reported seeing catches
of over a hundred nice-sized blue-!
gills at the lake while he was checking licenses. Crappie fishing was said to have been equally good. The lake has been a mecca for hundreds of local anglers, unable to get away for fishing trips to lakes in the northern part of the state. The only disadvantage for fishermen on the lake here is the ban against the use of boats.
‘Shades’ Hopes Realized
“The Shades” as # part of the state park system realizes a dream which many Hoosier conservationists and nature lovers have had for years. Its extensive forests and rugged terrain, similar to that of Turkey Run, has attracted thousands of visitors during past years. \ Addition of this area, already equipped with many of the facilities

found in the state parks, should relieve. some of the pressure on Turkey Run this summer. Plans proposed for the eventual connection of the Bhades and Turkey Run by a parkway along Sugar creek would result in ene of the outstanding parks of the middlewest from the standpoint of area, natural beauty and facilities for visitors.
More - Squirrels, Rabbits A general increase in the squirrel and rabbit populations in the Marion county drea was reported today by Conservation Officer Phillip Ward. An unusual number 6f young squirrels and rabbits have been observed in his travels over the county, a hopeful sign for the nimrods who are looking forward to the ‘hunting seasons. Several reports have been received from various parts of the state of young. quail and pheasants being seen, In some areas it is feared that the recent rains may have caused damage to the quall and other
