Work," Banners
By ROBERT HAEGER United Press Siaft Writer T BERLIN, May _23-—Ten thousand Germans in three Ruhr towns paraded with signs “We Are Starving” today while Gen, Lucius D. Clay announced here that food stocks in western Germany had reached an all-time low. Gen. Olay sald the food situation in the British and American zones would improve almost immediately. He credited the improved outlook to fresh arrivas of food from the United States and better collections from hoarding German farmers. The demonstrations in the British sone near Dusseldorf were orderly. All ended quickly and workers returned to their jobs. Approximately 5000 workers crowded in the city square at Remscheid, east of Duesseldorf, with banners proclaiming “we are starving, must eat for work.” Factories were shut and public transportation halted during the demonstration. Rallies also were held in two nearby towns. Reserves Have Shrunk Gen, Clay reported that food reserves have shrunk to three and a half weeks’ rations for residents of the British and American zones. A week ago there was a four-week reserve. “The stock situation is now at its lowest point. We know we are not going any lower and will improve,” he said. ’ “The ‘effort being made indicates that we are going to collect more than was thought possible a week ago.” The livestock slaughtering program also had improved and “I'm sure it can be maintained,” he said. «He stated that no action was being contemplated against German food demonstrators at present.
Student Shot Protecting Coed
CHICAGO, May 23 (U. P).—A University of Chicago student rested easily today after being shot in the abdomen by a gunman. The gun-* man attempted to attack him and his fiancee on the back steps of the school chapel. Charles Murphy, Dayton, O, threw a lighted cigaret in the gun-| man’s face after the man sneaked
up behind Miss Marjorie Firth, 16, §
over the girl's mouth, Mr. Murphy then jumped at the! thug, who stepped back and fired one shot at the student. The girl's screams routed the gunman and at- | tfacted university police who rushed | the boy to a campus hospital. Mr. Murphy and Miss Firth, who were engaged three weeks ago, were sitting on the secluded rear steps of Rockefeller Memorial chapel when the attack occurred. They were smoking and chatting, | she said, and did not know of the| man’s approach.
Farming Fatality Rate Is Third Highest
CHICAGO, May 23 (U. P)—It’s more dangerous to work on a farm than it is in the city, the National Safety council said today. The council said 54 farmers in every 100,000 died in work accidents in 1946 compared with 31 in all other industries. Only two industries showed higher death rates than farming—coal mining with 162 deaths per 100,000 and construction with 105. In all manufacturing industries, only 17 persons per 100,000 died in accidents.
