for his 400,000 miners. The government already has approved a vacation for the miners, June 28-30, the last three days that the mines are under federal jurisdiction. Indications are the United Mine Workers’ chieftain will extend the vacation to include thé first seven days after the mines are returned to private management. The three-day vacation period covers only two working days— Saturday, June 28 and Monday, June 30. The miners would not work on Sunday, June 29, in any case, Mr. Lewis now has nailed down $100 government vacation payments for his miners. Lewis Wins Point The U, M. W.'s agreement with Secretary of Interior'J. A. Krug provided for 10 days vacations and the $100 payments beginning June 20. Mr. Lewis insisted that the government was obligated to meet the conditions even though its authority to hold the mines ends June 30. Mr. Krug's lawyer ruled for Mr, Lewis. The coal mines administration requested Secretary of Labor Lewis B. Schwellenbach and President Truman to grant the necessary approval under the War Labor Disputes act. This was granted
