paigh. Bean beetles are waiting around for early beans. Plant lice are already clustering on roses. A typical bug problem—stated by Mrs. Virgil Oglesby, 1763 Vinewood ave.: “We've set out a snowball bush and were told it is likely to be infested with aphids, Will arsenate of lead kill them?” Arsenate of lead doesn't bother aphids in the least. For these tiny green (sometimes brown or black) plant lice that cluster on rosebuds or along plant stems or under leaves, stick tiny sucking tubes into the inside of the plant. They dam-
never even get the arsenate of lead you have hopefully put on the outside.
+ » ~ . POISON put on leaves will kill insects like bean beetles:that chew up leaf and all. But aphids must be killed not by these “stomach poisons” but by a “contact insecticide” — a poison that directly touches the body of each insect. |
Until some of the promised new controls appear, nicotine in some form, usually nicotine sulfate (sold under a whole variety of trade names) is the best aphid remedy. Soap is usualy added to it (follow package directions) just to make it spread better.
Important points for success: Spray or dust thoroughly. You must score a direct hit on each aphid.” Begin treatment when you see the very first on.;. Repeat at no less than 10-day intervals (five days is Seen): ” » HAVE YoU been using any of the 24-D weed killers on your lawn? Then you'd better keep your spray gun for weed killer only. Mrs. Harold Feightner, 7707 N. Meridian st., says they've found it almost impossible to clean the chemical out. Using the same gun later for rose spray they killed tender new leaves of the roses. The new dust form of 24-D (whatever the trade nine sou: buy it under) will save a little time— no mixing up of solutions to do. . s = 8 iT’S TIME now to pinch back tall (not cushion) chrysanthemums and hardy phlox if you want sturdy flower-filled mounds rather than
