Move to Get Action
On Postmasterships
By EARL RICHERT ~H d Staff W SHINGTON. May 21 —Two of
the senate's top Democratic strategists, Scott Lucas (Ill) and Millard Tydings (Md.) are seeking to smoke out the. 760 postmaster appoint ments which Senator William Langer (R. N. D.) has been sitting on for months.
little used in the senate, filing motions to require Senator Langer's civil service committee to send the nominations to the senate floor, where they can be acted upon. The motions filed by Senators Lucas and Tydings apply only to pending postmaster appointments in their own states. But they figure whatever action is taken on them will apply to all. Hope for G. O. P. Aid Senator Lucas hopes enough Republicans will join with the Democrats to force the committee to send out the nominations. "A majority vote is needed.
of the Republican senators being against confirmation of. these people,” he said. “There is no precedent for the Republicans holding up nominations for two years in the hope they will win the next Presidential election. And that is the only justification for the action.” Senator Langer, speaking as chairman of the civil service committee, informed the senate on Feb. 10 that all postmaster appointments would be held up until his committee had invegtigated the appointing procedure used by the Democratic administrations since 1933. Charges violation of Rules He contended that “very few, if any” Republicans were appointed during that period and that civil service rules were skirted in many instances to keep out Republicans. Indiana postmaster’ appointments being held up follow:
