* Housing Bill
Calls for Passage Of Wolcott Measure
¢ By NED BROOKS Weripps-Howard Stall Writer
WASHINGTON, May 16.— The American Legion today called for defeat of the Taft-Ellender-Wagner general housing bill, It declaved the measure’ would fmpair the nation’s economy and would © not help veterans to get homes. The Legion also urged senate passage of the house-approved Wolecott bill, This would abolish the office of Expediter Frank R. Creedon and remove virtually all of remaining jog jvernment controls on home
Legion headquarters made public the recommendations of the nation al executive committee and the special housing committee, opposing nine of the 12 sections of the T-E-W bill. £ One provision was indorsed and fwo others were recommended fn part. ” ‘Not a Veterans’ Measure’ Of the measure as a whole, the Legion said: “It is not in any way a veterans’ measure. It would impair the economy of the country if passed in its present form. Sound econamy is the first essential of the futudh welfare of all veterans.”
re embarking on new proinvolving large outlays, the housing committee said, congress “should first bring government expenses to a level which -will permit substantial tax reduction, a balanced budget and gradual reduction of the national debt.” Legion opposition was regarded in some quarters as the finish for the controversial T-E-W bill. The senate banking committee approved it by a vote of only seven to six. Senate passage has been regarded as doubtful and the house
‘banking committee thus far has
failed to comsider it. Wolcott Bill Approved The measure has been the No. 1 target of real estate and homebuilding lobbies. Its authors have contended it would provide the mechanism for a homebuilding program of 42 to 15 million new units nu me 10 years. lcott bill, déscribed by its PH fs returning housing to “free enterprise,” drew the Legions hearty orsement. The committee noted that the medSure would lift present re= striction8s on commercial and industrial construction. But ft said this would not impede housing since the full impaet of non-housing work
Then, the committee Said, materials should be flowing freely.
