P.) ~The vivid, bloody details of how a pleading Negro was beaten, knifed and finally put to death by the point blank blast of a shotgun were unfolded today at the mass lynch trial of 31 nervous white men. Again and again as the state drove for convictions, Roosevelt Carlos Hurd Sr, a burly taxicab dispatcher, was identified by his own men as the leader of the mob that snatched Willie Earle from the Pickens county jail Feb. 16 and killed him. Today, two other men-—-Woodrow Clardy and Ernest Stokes—were linked with Hurd as ring leaders of the angered mob, These two men, both taxicab drivers along with 26 of the other defendants, had failed to sign statements about their part in the crime. For one of the few times in history, the eyewitness details of a lynching were being presented to
