Long Errorless

‘ He Has Accepted 323 Chances In 59 Games Without a Bobble

By CARL LINDQUIST, United Press Sports Whiter NEW YORK, May 14—It used to be that every time Mel Ott came to bat he set a record, but now that he sits on the bench directing the Giants, John (Buddy) Kerr carries on by setting a new mark each

Kerr, who set two major league records for shortstops last spason by playing 52 errorless games in a chances, took up his unbroken strings this year and now has a mark of 59 straight games and 323 straight chances without a bobble: He surpassed the old marks of a couple of pretty fancy fielders, Leo Durocher of the 1931 Cincinnati Reds with 51 straight games and Eddie Miller of the 1940 Boston with 251 consecutive

Kerr has been out most of the first with ear trouble gvhich caused dizzy spells, and later when he hurt his leg last week in a collision, That he was unable to play every day was a big factor in the slow start of the Giants and it is significant that in the seven games he has played,

Kerr led the way at bat and afield yesterday with four hits and four hard chances as the Giants blanked the tail-end world champion Cardinals at St. Louis, 5 to 0, on Lefty Dave Koslo’s two-hitter. Both hits off Koslo were singles. Rookie Earl Torgeson, getting his sixth homer in eight days and add-

Torgeson leads the majors in runs batted in with 26. Brooklyn got 13 hits; but Johnny Vandermeer bore down when he needed to and was helped by three double plays. The Red Sox crushed the White Sox at Boston, 19 to 6, getting 18 hits to Chicago's 17. Ted Williams hit two homers for Boston while Bobby Doerr got one, and Luke Appling and Murrell Jones hit for the route for Chicago. Doerr also got a triple, double and single, while Eddie Pellagrini drove in four runs on four singles. Tie Record The Yankees tied an old major league mark for the 19th time when Charley Keller, Joe DiMaggio and Johnny Lindell hit consecutive homers in the sixth in a 9-to-1 rout of the Browns at New York. Keller, coming out of a bad slump, also got another homer and single to lead the 14-hit attack as Allie Reynolds pitched a three-hitter. Hal Newhouser came out of a
