I. and Porter Tunes Wrap Up
All American Honors
for Home State
By DONNA MIKELS
For some Feason unfathomable
which came near the international by rland’s Cole Porter, Now Indiana's Hoagy Carmichael comes forth with “Ivy,” which will probably cinch the beguine honors for the state. “Ivy yy w h en first released several weeks ago, showed promise even theugh the first recordings of it were just so-so. Now with excellent arrangements and recordings by such top- & notchers as Ziggy A : Elman (M-G-M) My. - Carmichael and Woody Herman (Columbia) “Ivy” 1s a cinch to/cling to the hit parade for some time.
to a native ‘Hoosler, Indiana com-
posers ‘and beguine rhythms seem to take to each other. I can't recall any beguine tune originating from the Netherlands Bast Indies (Ball is supposedly the natural habitat for the rhythm)

VICTOR-Reviving one of Miller's bands all time hits, Tex Beneke records “Sunrise Serenade,” with a little more accent on brads and strings than in the Miller version. The second side features Garry Stevens vocals on “Through,” a tune of several seasons past. Louis Armstrong couples “You Don't Learn That in School,” and “1 Believe,” both scattered with between the lines ad libs and hot horn in typical “Satchmo” style. Perry Como creates a listening mood with his nostalgic “When You Were Sweet 16” The reverse is “Chi-Baba, Chi-Baba,” which has nothing to do with Mexican hairless dogs, but ‘is something of a jetpropelled Italian lullaby. Up the Nerve to Kiss You,” and ‘That’s Where I Came In.” Crooner Douglas teams with the Bloch orchestra on “No Greater Love,” and “The Egg and 1.” Up pops Monica Lewis again. on “It's Nice to Be Nice,” the reverse sidé of “Mam’selle” sung by Jeffrey Clay and Ray Bloch’s orchestra. Incidentally for the small few who share my inexplicable liking for Skinnay Ennis singing. (I suppose I can call it singing.) ‘Signature now has some new records of some of his old favorites. F'rinstance, breathless “Got a Date With an Angel,” and “Lamplight” are almost the same as the originals, lacking only the mellow Hal Kemp background. Ennis also has re-cut “Heart of Stone.” Pleasant listening, but it doen’t measure up to the old Kemp version, now a collector's item.

Laine’s Records Gain Favor Here
Rage of West Coast Getting Popular
It looks as if Frankie Laine, the vocalist who's the rage of the West coast, finally {is establishing a beachhead in Indianapolis. Recintly Jane's record shop, 803 N. Delaware st., plugged one ‘ot his tunes with a chalk ad on the window. For several days it remained with his last name spelled “Lane.” Then, some fan: apparently called the writer to task and it was revised to “Frankie Laine.” Mel Torme, the husky voiced vocalist whose “Stranger in Town,” and “You Laughed at Me for the Last Time,” vas a top seller, has signed up wiih Musicraft records. Four new records with Sonny Burke's orchestra should be released shortly.
For whatever it’s worth, the first artists chosen for popular U. 8. music broadcasts to Russia included
man, retained by the state department as consultant for the program; Mary Lou William's “Humoresque,” Tommy Dorsey's “At Sundown,” Russ Case “In the Still of the Night,” and Tex Beneke’s “Anniversary * What no Victor Red labels? (D. M.)
