A Radio Moscow broadcast heard in London told of “strange” losses of Soviet diplomatic baggage in the New York customs House. Only 27 of 29 boxes addressed to the Soviet United Nations representatives had arrived, the broadcast said. Previously only 15 boxes were delivered out of 19 sent, Radio Moscow added. “Inquiries to customs authorities concerning these ‘strange’ losses re-
ing said: “Russian baggage, both for the diplomatic corps and the United Nations, is given free entry to the United States and is not, subject to inspection by customs agents. I don't understand the basis for the claim.”

FARMINGDALE, f I, May 8] (U. P.).—The army air forces P84 | thunderjet — the country's fastest | plane —- will try this summer to! break the British-held world speed record, Republic Aviation Corp. offi'clals said today. The AAF permitted disclosure at the same time that Republic is now in high-gear peacetime production on the sleek new fighter which has flown 631 miles per hour in unoffi-! cial trials. The first P-84 will be assigned to the: air defense command's 14th fighter group. This group will begin || operations this summer at Dow field, Bangor, Me. under Lt. Col. Lewis W. Check. The British-held speed record is 616 miles per hour. Under international rules it must be exceeded by five miles for a new record to be set. Both the P-84, then an experimental plane, and the Lockheed P-80 shooting star were to attempt records last fall But at the last moment the trials were called off. The thunderjet, however,’ established an American record of “611 | mph. at Muroc army air field, Cal. test base for new aircraft. Alexander Kartveli, Republic vice president who designed the plane, said he was hopeful of copping a world record this time. There are reports that an attempt may be
made earlier by a P-80.
