DUKE DENIES IT — Rumors that swing music is dying draw only a snort from Bandleader Duke Ellington who says that hot music is hot music whether
{resemblance to their original forms is, however, purely accidental. “Fine and Dandy” features an accordion in the Goodman quintet |
doing the squeezing. The accordion background work is, to- coin 0 phrase, “fine: and dandy.” “Lone{some Road” is nothing at all like authors Gene Austin and Nat Shilkret intended but it's terrific instrumental listening with Goodman's clarinet, backed by drums, bass and piano. The Pied Pipers present their versions of “Mam’selle” and “It's ther Same Old Dream,” both in the slow, dreamy pace. "Too Often Recorded
Martha Tilton gets some excellent backing from Dean. Elliot's orchestra and male vocal group on an up and coming tune, “I Wonder, I Wonder, I. Wonder” and “That's My Desire.” Billy Butterfield has caught the “Stella by Starlight” bug and wastes 10 inches of wax on the loften recorded theme from “The | Uninvited.” Much better is the second side, ‘Pat O'Conner’s vocals land nice instrumental work on ‘Maybe You'll Be There.” | "Last and far from least is the |King Cole's snappy double feature,

‘Swing’ Was Once ‘Jazz, Says Duke
Scoffs at Rumor, Hot Music Dying
By JACK GAVER United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, May 6.—Duke Ellington and his band have been peddling jazz for dlmost a quarter of a century. And they expect to continue the practice regardless of whether it's the mode to call it swing, be-bop,«jump, jive or ‘Whatever. The Duke is a hard-working man who usually lets his music speak for him. But all this loose talk of recent
_ {months about the demise of swing
loosened him up today. And he became practically garrulous in his dressing room at the Paramount theater. ~ » » “AS FAR back as I can remember {—and I'm getting to the place where {that's really going back—some peoip ple have been saying ‘hot music’ was through, " he said. “The same thing is being said today, only now they refer to the corpse as swing. “Well, it just happens that a lot of the mourners are not in the music business regularly and. their answers aren't so accurate or helpful. “We've been around for some 20 years and not hit-or-miss either, but 52 weeks a year, “Prom where we sit, jazz has come a long way. It started as a wobbly offspring of ragtime. Paul Whiteman dressed it up in evening clothes.
» » # “WE WROTE a song in 1931 called ‘It Don’t Meant a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing.” In 1935 Benny Goodman labeled his entire product ‘Swing.’ “In searching _for ‘the novelty twist that sometimes sparks success,“ others have coined new names for basically the same music, or exaggerated offshoots of it. “The important thing isn't what iyou call it, but the fact that, in
: spite of a lot of death announce-
ments, it's still very much alive and | It's matured, too.” : | » td » THE DUKE acknowledged that some bands may be finding the pickings leaner than during the War | years, He pointed out, though, that | every other line is suffering a little, too. “And ‘the victims haven't been| exclusively swing bands,” he added. | “The result has been an actual strengthening of the position of the stronger outfits. “You see, there's one thing about | swing or jazz that you mustn't forget. It's emotional—the part of rhythm that makes you want to bounce.. That kind of music has| deep roots in American character.”
TUNE ON RECORD ENVELOPE “Summer Snow,” a heretofore unpublished tune which was waxed! by Bob Hayward with Allen Schra-' der's orchestra (Black and White), is being sold in special record envelopes on which lyrics of “Summer | Snow” are printed, because sheet’ music is not available.
‘Phonograph records evidently one "of several major producing com
or 1,250,000 per week. The - currently-released albums and single records being reviewed here probably won't be even near
{the top of the list in number of
units sold, but we know they will have a warm appeal for discriminating collectors of classical and semi-classical music.
TCHAIKOVSKY: SYMPHONY NO. 2 in C Minor, played by the Minneapolis . symphony orchestra conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. (Columbia, M-673, five 12-inch records) Known as the “Little Russian” symphony,“this is one of the most admirable of Tchaikovsky's earlier works, and is steadily gaining popularity in the symphonic repertoire, although still overshadowed by his great Fourth, Fifth and Sixth. The first movement employs for theme the Russian folk song “Down by Mother Volga,” the final moyement uses the folk song “The Crane,” “and the second movement is based upon the wedding march in
the opera “Undine.” These are ar-
tistically blended into a fast-moving and brilliant work, whose second movement is particularly appealing; and Mitropoulos, one of the foremost interpreters of Tchaikovsky, leads his men in an inspired performance. The album has a most artistic and colorful cover.
BARTOK: CONCERTO NO. 3, played by Gyorgy Sandor, pianist, with the Philadelphia orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. (Columbia, M-674, three 12-inch records.) Bela Bartok, the Hungarian composed who died just a year ago last September, was one of the most distinctive and original creative artists of modern times.
folk music, separating it from the
in, and then assimilated it.in his own compositions, but in an artful manner that makes it difficult to determine where the folk music ends and the original Bartok begins. The Third Piano Concerto had just been completed when he died, and is considered the epitome of his style. 1It could have no better interpreter than dor, who was Bartok's friend and former pupil, while the orchestra. provides: perfect accompaniment ander the baton of another fellow Hungarian, eee Ormandy.
and Orchestra, played by Albert Sammons, violin, with the Liverpool yhilharmonic orchestra conducted by Malcolm Sargent. (Columbia, M672, three 12-inch records) One might well think, upon first hearing this music without iderntification, that is is the work of one of the youngest and most radical of modern composers. Actually, Delius, the English composer who spent most of his life in France, lived from 1863 to 1934.

During the ‘last 10 years of his life he was crippled with paralysis and blindness, and had to dictate his music. This Violin Concerto is one of his later works, and is performed for this album by the noted English violinist to whom it was dedicated, Albert Sammons. There is only one movement, and it can best be described as a long impasioned monologlie for the solo violin against an orchestral background.
