Downey Church Class Proves Inspiration for Pastor's Book

By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church Editor ¢ Solutions for marriage problems discussed by a group of young

couples in Irvington furnished the material for a new booklet.

The 50 couples meet as a Sunday school class in their own depart-

Christian church. The average age of them have small children.

Before the couples’ class began to talk over marital difficulties—

Wednesday Youth night will be ‘observed Tues- :

The speakers are Miss Margaret Miss shannon

Shannon, New York, who recently visited the Orient under the sponsorship of the Presbyterian church; Miss Florence Stansbury, also of New York, specialist in children’s work; the Rev. Leon D. Sanborne, - “director of the Westminster foundation at Ohis State university, and Dr. Walter W. Sikes, Indianapolis, world peace director for the Disciples of Christ.

finances, sex, in-laws and similar subjects—they agreed to be frank. They indicated they did not wish to curtail the usefulness of their forums of Pastor Took Notes

The couples and their teacher, Mrs. C. A. Weesner, gave the pastor, the Rev. F. W, Wiegmann, permission to take notes on the marriage discussions and write the

“Christian Happiness in the Home.” The religious press is reviewing the booklet with special emphasis on Family week which begins tomorrow. The Bethany Press, St. Louis, is the publisher. ; A few of the other thoughts dealt with in the class and booklet are: How to keep peace in the home in spite of over-crowded, temporary quarters; why we want. children; is it right to get married if you don't want children? making the same effort for devotion in marriage as in courtship; religion in| the family; parents are co-workers with God; the family council, and

fun for the whole family.

The class advocates the family council which has been out with good results, members report. The council is. a meeting of a father, mother, children and other members of the. household to review all matters of mutual concern. The meetings are held weekly with officers functioning. Discuss Differences

“When there are genuine differences, they and the causes for them will be brought out into the open in the council,” writes the pastor. The mismanagement. of finances is described by the couples as the spark that frequently causes marriages to go up in smoke. For this reason, two whole discussion periods were given to finances and budgets were made for families of definite incomes. For example, the couples suggested that a family of three with an annual income of $4200 might wise- | spend $1560 for food, $250 for | clothing, $420 for rent, $360 for savings and insurance and $80 for gifts {to various causes.

The young people seem to set spiritual growth above all other interests. Every session begins with devotions led by a member. It includes prayer, Scriptufe reading, a religious talk and music. A smalj altar arranged by the members dominates the room. On it stand a cross and candlesticks wrought by one of the men.

A number of the couples have inaugurated the custom of saying grace before meals and holding family worship, since they joined the group. Ten couples were received into the Downey church membership at Easter and several of the male members have become deacons. .

The class started three years ago with a few members in a very small room. When word got about that the marriage forums would be held, the enrollment rapidly increased until a whole new department became necessary. Social Meeting Twice a Month Social meetings are held twice each modth at. night. and. large out-of-door parties’ are given with children as special guests in the spring and fall. A tree is trimmed for the Christmas festival and special favors are provided for the children. Presidents and vice presidents are always elected in pairs. Mr, and Mrs. Carol Fitch are the current presidents, and Mr. and Mrs. Gwyn Barnett, vice presidents. Mrs. Edward Sparks is secretary and Maurice Schoen, treasurer. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Ulmer were presidents at the time of the marriage discussions.

Miss Shannon made a survey of post-war missions in China for the Presbyterian church and also visited the Philippines and India. She will lecture classes on “World Evan-| gelism™ Tuesday at 9 a. m. and 2:30 p. m. and Wednesday at 10:40 a m, Miss Stansbury is secretary of the children's world crusade, a movement which seeks to bring children | into Sunday schools and churches. 4 It is sponsored by the Northern Baptist convention.
