Better Drugs, Fuels Revealed by Chemists
.B. DAVID DIETZ Seripps-Howard <Bolence Editer " WASHINGTON, May 2.—"Bigge and better” was the watchword i the world of science during the
v
month just ended. April, 1947, will be remembered a: “the month in which. chemists offered .. mankind better yerm-killers, better gdrugs, better glue, better motor” fuels, and more.
i les. | Meanwhile physicists promised, in the event civilization insist- ; ed on committing Mr. Diets suicide, bigger and : better atomic bombs.
Among the important scientific meetings of the mogth which this science editor attended were the American Chemical society in Atlantie City, the American Cancer society In New York, the American . Philosophical society in Philadelphia, and the National Academy of Sciences in Washington.
Take Inventory.
Scientists have for many years taken spring inventory of the progress of their fields each April, This happy custom, interrupted by world war II, has been resumed. Dr. Thomas H. McGavack of the New York Medical college told the assembled chemists at Atlantic Citv i © of success in the treatment of toxic | goiter with three new drugs, all derivatives of thiouracil. In 50 per eent of the cases treated, they made surgery unnecessary. In the other 80 per cent they simplified the operation and eliminated the dangers usually attendant on this particular operation. The chemists also heard of a synthetic cousin of marijuana, 70 times as potent as the natural narcotic. { Prof. Roger Adams of the University pd of Illinois said that he anticipated ‘ important medical uses for it. . Most of the new germ-killers described at Atlantic City are still in the experimental stage. Dr. Gustav J. Martin of the National Drug Co. reported that the germ-killers in {use could be greatly increhsed by § combining them. kK He urged the simultaneous use of § both sulfa drugs and penicillin and i sald that sulfanilimide could be made 1000 times more powerful by sombining it with acridine. Dr. Viadmir Haensel and Dr. V. N. + Ipatioff of Universal Oil Products ! © Oo, described a new hydrocarbon i known as triptane which is one of i the most powerful aviation fuels in existence. Dr. Gustav Egloff, research director of Universal, added that no air- ! * plane or auto engine now in existence is good enough to run on pure triptane ‘and that it was time for motor designers to catch up with the new fuels which chemists can now provide, Physicists in Philadelphia and Washington agreed that present studies of cosmic rays might yield information about the behavior of sub-atomic particles which is turn * might point the way to atomic bombs more powerful than any now in existence.
