By CARL LUNDQUIST, United Press Sports Writer

NEW YORK, April 30.~They've been laughing at the Giants. They | say there are times they look like the Princeton varsity in their bright

hew orange and black trimmed uniforms. Their outfielders throw to the wrong bases, their pitchers have blown fat leads in the late innings, they have made 19 errors in 10 games to top both leagues, and there are almost daily lineup shifts as

Manager Mel Ott tries desperately to find a winning combination. But in the Big Town their's is the most loyal legion of rooters and the most patient. They remind you that the last time that the Giants went for orange and black trim on their suits they not only won the 1933 pemmant but the world series from Washington. And

.| they'll never let you forget that the

Giants year in and year out are the most terrific home run clouters in the National league.

Today, after a dismal start, there was a ray of hope and it was mainly because of the mighty hitter, Georgia Johnny Mize. It was the hulking Mize, whose name rhymes appropriately with size, who set the pace yesterday in a morale-boosting, 7-to-2 victory over the world champion Cardinals, a victory that elevated the Giants to seventh and left St. Louis alone in the unfamiliar surroundings of last place.

Prodigious Homer

Mize got only one hit, but it was a prodigious 460-foot, three-run homer off Howie Pollet, lefty ace of the Cardinal staff and a 21-game winner last season. It was his seventh homer in 10 games. It was the third defeat without a triumph for Pollet, who was knocked out by Mize’s smash, leaving the game with a 5-to-0° deficit. The Giants made 12 hits as young

But Jimmy decided to try | it again and already is working | getting the car ready for the quali- | fication trials. 600, Jackson is a former football 800 hlayer at Tech and was picked for all-city honors during his Junior

boxer. He was drawn to the Speedway [naturally and served an apprentice(ship as pit attendant and riding mechanic... Montia Kennedy scattered seven for his first victory. The defeat ended a five-game Giant losing steak and extended the Cardinal losing string to six. At Ebbets field, the Dodgers won their sixth straight, 10 to 6, over the second-place Cubs and took a two*game, first-place lead. The Cubs lost after four straight victories. Dixie Walker, sparking a sevenrun rally in the eighth with a personally accounted for victory by driving in four runs, Carl Furillo added two more in the big inning with a homer and Ed Stanky brought in two with another double. The Dodgers haven't tasted defeat at home this year.
