May's Lawyer Says Checks Were ‘Campaign Donations’
Defense Denies $2000 Contribution
Denies Marines Will ‘Be Reduced
Report Unfounded, Patterson Asserts
\ WASHINGTON, April 24 (U. P). -Secretary of War Robert P, Patterson said today there was “no foundation” to reports that the marine corps would be reduced to a mere “dress parade” unit under the proposed unification of the armed forces. He made the statement in testi. mony; before the house executive expenditures committee,
The senate armed services committee had called on him and Secretary of Navy James V. Forrestal to produce purported “secret plans” by the joint chiefs of staff for reducing the marine corps. Gen, A. A. Vandegrift, marine corps commandant, testified eaglier in the week that under the pending unification plan the corps would be virtually wrecked as a combat force. Refers to Eisenhower
Rep. Ross Rizley (R. Okla.), asked Mr. Patterson about press reports 80 quoting Gen. Vandegrift, “In;'my own opinion,” Mr. Pate terson said, “I don’t think there's any reason for it. The marine corps 1s continued .by the act itself. It is covered in the same way the army, nayy.and air corps are covered.” Mr, Patterson told the house committée he could not produce secret staff’ papers, “You will have to ask Glen. Eisen hower for those,” Mr. Patterson sald. “They're not in my province to give you. Gen Eisenhower will be here in a day or two to testify on this Ply and you can ask him for them hen.”
