"Happy' Confesses
His First 2 Years Were Turbulent
Tells Sports Writers Last Week's Ruling Was Not Influenced by Outsiders
CLEVELAND, April 18
(U. P.).—Baseball Commissioner A. B.
(Happy) Chandler made it plain today that if he had to do it all over again, Brooklyn Dodger Manager Leo Durocher still would get a one-
year suspension.
Without once mentioning Durocher’s name, Chandler said last night in a speech before Cleveland baseball writers that he was not influenced
by outsiders in any way when he made his ruling against the Dodger manager last week,
“1 still make my own decisions and I make them honestly,” he said. “I have no obligations to anyone in baseball, but only to baseball in general.”
Chandler appeared at-a dinner in which Bil Veeck, president of the Cleveland Indians, was honored as the city's “man of the year in baseball.”
He indicated that he had gotten renewed confidence in himself after his recent ruling, in which he not only penalized Durocher but suspended Charley Dressen, New York Yankee coach, for 30 days, fined the New York Yankee and Brooklyn Dodger clubs $2000 apiece and fined Harold Parrott, Brooklyn road secretary, $500. “I'm not afraid of anything now and will always take what actions
I deem necessary,” he said. “I intend to keep on doing this as long as T am commissioner.” Chandler confessed that he had undergone a turbulent period in his first two years as commissioner, but that he probably would be better équipped to handle himself hereout. “I've had my share of catching the past two years, but if I can't take it, I shouldn't dish it out,” he sald. “Well, I can do both.” The former Democratic senator from Kentucky took a crack at sports writers in a statement in which he paid tribute to his predecessor as commissioner, the late Judge K. M. Landis, “Landis was a magnificent .character,” he said. “I sometimes think today’s sports writers can commune with him because they always seem to know what he would have done. “But I doubt it. 44
