Over Reform. |
City Hall Target’ Of Various Groups
By RICHARD LEWIS - Times Staff Writer MUNCIE, Ind, April 18.—As a result of a reform uprising, the political temperature of Américas “Middletown” is running high. All kinds of heat is being generated by all kinds of people—except those in power. Even Muncie's noted charaoter, Court Asher, whose anti-Semitic “X-Ray” circulates its Facist-type propaganda in 30 states, has climbed on the reform bandwagon. Asher has split page one of his weekly tabloid between attacks on Jews and Henry Wallace and assaults on the administration of Mayor John Hampton, : “Only Target the Same "This, does not mean that the Citizens league has accepted Asher as an ally. The only thing in common between the reformers and Asher is the target—City hall. Their motives areemiles apast. Asher admits he has deserted

cause he didn't get the legal ad-

While Muncie citizens generally regard Court. Asher as a _ town character, few underestimate his detailed knowledge of local politics. The fact that Asher has deserted
{ the Hampton political machine is
an indication to some observers here that the mayor's ship is sinking. Mayor Hampton is running for re-election. With his city controller, John D. Lewis, he has the Republican organization. He seems to be in a strong position. Copies All Vanish Many people in Muncie say they ignore Asher and his anti-Semitic “X-Ray.” The tabloid-size newspaper is issued every Friday afternoon and practically given away by

The council has been organised by Mr. Anthony, a fleld representative of the National Institute of Soeial Relations, whose chairman is Dr. Julius Schreiber of Washington, D. C., s social psychiatrist. By tact and solid determination, Mr. Anthony has overcome a nstural prejudice of natives toward an outsider and has won the support of a good many prominent people for his discussion groups. These meet in the Y. W. GQ A. basement and their purpose is to

talking things over. The one implacable foe of this movement is Court Asher, who attacks public discussion in the Y. W. C. A. basement as “Un-Ameri-ean.” So far, Mr. Anthony's discussions which are planned to let people talk over what bothers them about loeal and national -affairs, has not sueeeeded in attracting mass audiences. In fact, the night the group dist eussed aid to Greece, less than two dozen people showed up while 3000 packed in to hear Spike Jones a couple of blocks away. But it is gaining some momentum and a move to crush discussion in Muncie i8 under way, too. Gossip schoolteacher was fired from a county school because his wife was on..the council. This gossip hag frightened a number of people away from the diseussions.
