Times Special WASHINGTON April 17. — Tim-

berland purchases in Indiana this year by the U, 8. forest service will ~ total $100,000, according to a re-

port made today by J. H. Price, regional forester, to Senator Homer E. Capehart, The land acquisition, Mr. Price said, will consolidate present national forest holdings and make possible more economical administration, | The regional forester said that the Hoosier Forest, which attracted 100,000 visitors last year, will be the object of a four-way program this year, as follows: ONE: Extension of fire protection to forest lands now unprotected. TWO: Continuation of the planting program which was resumed in 1946 when 16,300 acres were planted

"THREE: harvesting timber through increased

utilization of all tree products. |

FOUR: Correcting, as far as possible, destructive cutting practices and encolraging wider adoption of good forest management programs on private land. Mr. Price sald that in 1946 384 Indiana farmers took part in the program by which the forest service assisted private owners jn managing their woodlands for eontinuous production.

State Coal Output Now Near Normal

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., April 17 (U. P.) ~Indiana coal production is reported “practically” back to normal with 87 per cent of the state's miners returned to the pits. Lt, Cmdr, C. E. Poe, Rovernment administrator for Indiana mines said 7045 of the 8050 Hoosier miners were back at their jobs. Cmdr, Poe said three of the re-| maining six idle mines in the state! were expected to resume operations | .by today. Still idle were two large deep railroad shaft mines and four small truck mines, Cmdr. Poe said “about the only common violation” turned up by the recent safety inspection was:the failure of most mines to custing. But that all mines now were observing this mew ederal saiety regulation. He caid rock dusting applied only to dry mines and was designed to prevent the intensity and spreading of underground explosions.

Predict 20 Pct. Use In Ten Years

By PAUL F. ELLIS United Press Staff Correspondent ATLANTIC CITY, N. J, April 17. —A scientist predicted today ihat within 10 years 20 per cent of all the gasoline used in this country will be synthetic — made from natural gas. The expert, Dr. Robert S. Aries, research associate in thé Polytechnic institute of Brooklyn, also forecast early production of vast quantities of industrial alcohol and many other chemicals from gas. He spoke at the 111th annual meeting of the American chemical society. Dr. Aries said that it would be possible to use this alcohol from gas for whisky, .gin and other beverages, but that “consumer resistance and laws specifying grain as the raw material,” would probably prevent such application. Has Brightest Future “However, the cost of producing it is only about one-fifth of the cost of making alcohol from agricultural materials,” he said. Dr. Aries said that natural gas “is the material with the brighiest future, as it is the cheapest source of alcohol and a host of other chemicals. ® we ++

because of results he achieved in the New York legislature, Coalition Leader He has emerged as leader of a two-party coalition’ which has just watered down the Taft-Ball-Sndith ideas for submission to the senate next week. Senator Ives granted that, «while formerly the - preponderance of power rested with management, as a result of enactment of the Wagner act and through its administration, this preponderance now has come to rest with labor. Neither of these conditipns is desirable d either of them leads to certain industridl strife.” Beyond that, Mr. Ives appeared as a middle-of-the-roader between the Hartley bill in the house and the Taft committee in the sénate. He would outlaw admitted excesses or organized labor and refer the more controversial issues to an investigating committee, The house rolled on ‘toward early passage of the Hartley bill without any important amendment. It voted down préposals from both the right and left wings; mentioned the telephone strike and possible coal and steel strikes as reasons for the bill: left no doubt that this branch of congress would give somethiigz for the senate to worry about,

How much Electrici is a Billion

N 1946 the Public Service Company of ‘Indiana supplied homes, industries, and farms located in 70 of the 92 counties of Indiana with '1,380,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. Over a billion" kilowatt hours! How much electricity is that?

4 XR

A “kilowatt hour” is the accepted unit for measuring the amount of electricity used. It means, the use of 1,000 watts of electrical energy for

in terms of mechanical power, a the use of 1.34 “horse power” for one hour. ~

The average home in our territory uses about 1,000 kilowatt hours a year. A billion kilowatt hours, then, is enough electricity for a million average homes for a year! Actually, we supply about 215,000 homes in Indiana with electricity. (This includes over 20,000 farms.)

Then there are nearly 36,000 stores and other commetcial enterprises that average about 4,200 kilowatt hours each per year. . . and over 2,800 governmental agency customers using a combined total of 84,444,000 kilowatt hours per year.

But this still leaves the greatest share of the billion kilowatt hous to ac-. count for. Who uses them? Here's where Industrial Indiana comes in! We

gether these industrial users consumed 683,000,000 kilowatt hours in 1946.

The coal industry of Indiana used the most, automotive accessories and ; parts manufacturers were the next largest, stegl and wire running a close third, ' ~and the thousands of other diversified industries utilized the remainder.

* ‘What is our PRESENT generating capacity? Let's look . at it this way: When the war came, we were not caught “off base.” Our generating capacity was in the process of being expanded in anticipation of tremendous electric power demands, and the war accelerated the pace. Since 1940 we have added 187,500 kilowatts of new capacity and now have installed generating capacity of 309,674 kilowatts . . . which means that if it were possible for our customers to use this capacity 100 percent of the time, we could’ generate 2,713,000,000 kilowatt hours per year!

% What FUTURE capacities are we planning? Right now we have on order an additional generating unit for installation in our Edwardsport plant, and another unit for a newly-planned generating plant near Noblesville. When these two units are completed, our ability to generate electricity will reach a | potential 3%4 billion kilowatt hours a year! ‘

% And the cost of electricity? . . . Our customers now enjoy the LOwWEsT ELECTRIC RATES they've ever had! ii
