Film of 'Henry
last night, is undoubtedly the best
ture. So it's Shakespeare on the screen. So it not only stars Laurence Olivier, but is directed by him, When you hearand read a lot, about a film and a personality, you begin to ‘feel skeptical-—or maybe that’s just a newspaperman’s reaction. Some have gaid the film's too long (two hours and 20 minutes). I wondered would there be inter mission, a chance to puff on a cigaret after the first hour and 10 minutes of Elizabethan eloquence. There was no intermission. The film seemed no longer than ordinary films, no longer than it should be.
Screen Clarifies Shakespeare Meantime you have seen some of

lines and visualize the action he lintended. ; | What the screen “Henry V” does is make Shakespéare all of a sud{den clear. The film is a vitamin ‘shot to the imagination. It relates the magnificent lines, forbidding though they look in blank verse in a seldom-opened volume, to people. Battle Scenes Spectacular
The plot is simple enough. King Henry V of England, erstwhile Prince Hal, companion of Falstaff and other roisterers, has taken on royal dignity upon his ; father's death. On one of those medieval quarrels over sovereignty, he gaes to war with France. up to a big action” climax in the battle of Agincourt. There isn't space to describe the

the picturé was made between air raids, buzz bombs and moments of hostile or friendly aircraft noise in England). Such scenes have’ been done before, seldom, if ever, so well. Like everything else in the film, they
Held together by the dominant personality and ringing voice of Mr. Olivier, they achieve an effect far beyond the usual movie costume spectacle. Followed by the love passages between Henry and Princess Katherine of France (Renee Asherson), she knowing little English and he less French, the battle of Agincourt is both tragic and symbolic. Man's Duty Is to Fight In the numerous episodic scenes before, during and after the battle, it sets forth the Elizabethan conception of the Whole Duty of Man. Shakespeare evidently accepted the notion that the duty of man is combat. That's where glory is, also tragedy. But—and this is the bur< den of King Henry's pronouncements on the subject, better tragedy than Inglorious’ refusal to fight.
and vice versa. In Shakespeare's own phrase about Cleopatra, the film has infinite variety. There$ just too much for brief description, such as the William Walton music (Mr. Walton's expert work on Bach themes was’ heard here in an Ine dianapolis Symphony concert in the past season). It would take columns to describe what J. Arthur
