Britain Offers UN Palestine ‘Deal

, LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y,, April 17 (U0. P.)~—~Great Britain will pass up a seat on the proposed Palestine fact-finding commission of the United Nations if the other big powers and the Arab states do likewise, official sources said today. This would leave Britain, the caretaker of troubled Palestine under a League of Nations mandate, on the sidelines during an important phase of the United Nations’ attempt to decide the future of the Holy Land. American officials hinted that they might also campaign for a completely “neutral” commission when the general assembly sets up the Palestine fact-finding body at its forthcoming special session. But Americans here said the state department had not yet decided definitely that it wants the factfinding to be done without U. S. participation. It was not certain whether Russia would agree to the British plan. Russia, like the United States, is as deeply enmeshed ‘as Britain in the Palestine case.
