Shouts to Senate's Mine Blast Probers
u. M. W. Chieftain Angered at Reference To Charge Union Failed to Co-operate
By LAURENCE GONDER United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 17—John L. Lewis today siccused Secretary
of Interior J. A. Krug of lying and following a policy of “harassment, oppression and intimidation” in dealing with his United Mine Workers
union.
The U. M. W. leader made the charge before a senate public lands subcommittee which is investigating the Centralia, +Ill, explosion in
which 111 miners were killed. Mr. Lewis blames Secretary Krug's policles for the ‘disaster. The union chief was reminded that Krug had charged U. M. W. safety committees with non-co-op-eration under the contract for the govérnment-operated s o f t coal
« mines, Mr. Lewis retorted:
“That's one of Krug's characteristic slurs. That is a falsehood.” Invitation Ignored ‘As Mr. Lewis appeared before the committee, he still . had not ane swered the government's invitation

for the union and the mine owners to get together on contract talks. Mr. Lewis shouted that Mr. Krug “lied” when he signed the mine safety code in the government contract with ‘the U. M. W. He read this statement from the code to the senators: “The coal mines administrator will put the code into effect at the mines.” This “never” was done, Lewis said then shouted: “J. A. Krug lied when he put his John Hancock to that proposition. And we're asking the congress for redress, He lied!” Mr. Lewis said that safety codes and regulations were useless with out effective administration. “And that's what Krug didn't do,” he said. “Krug did not live up to the pledge signed by him on the President's desk.” Cites Peabody Case He said he had correspondence to show that the union tried to use its local safety committees. He offered letters dealing with the closing of the Peabody Coal Co. mine 47 at Harco, Ill. In that case, the government had ruled the committee overstepped its authority, Mr. Lewis said. Lommittee Chairman Guy Cordon (R. Ore.) asked if that was the only instance showing the government had overriden a safety committee, Mr. Lewis answered that it was the only “formal instance” and that the committees normally dealt with the mine management. Lewis appealed for greater mine safety. The United Mine Worker chieftain said this nation soon will be unable to produce a surplus of coal unless iv stops “killing the mine workers, using them up and throwing them on the scrap heap.”
Lottery Ordinance Ready City Attorney Henry Krug said today he nad prepared a sample city ordinance to make it unlawful to manufacture or possess lottery tickets. Safety Board President William HM. Remy requested the ordinance for consideration Tuesday by the safety board.

Columnist Robert Ruark’s views on of study as a timesaver. “Suppose our hero, Horace Loverboy, finds that he is unable to keep a date with his dream queen,” supposes . the male-student-letter-writer. “Horace will simply tell her to read pages 38 to 40 in the book and therein will be told the story of his love for her. “Of course it will no longer be necessary for Loverboy to dally while saying goodnight. His line will run thusly: ‘Darling, page 44, line 32’ She replies, ‘Loverboy, page 44, line 38.’ This, of course depends on whether or not Loverboy studied his lesson for that night.” There are other letters—many of | them—being submitted daily to The Times contest. Some of the writers feel there should be a course of study of dating and courtship taught in the schools. Others agree with Columnist Ruark that the] trial and error approach is the better way to learn the facts of]
