WEDNESDAY, APRIL = "Madame Butterfly’ af I. U. Marred by Sore Throats

By-HENRY BUTLER, Times Staff Writer BLOOMINGTON, Ind., April 16—~The Metropolitan Opera's “Madame Butterfly” came in on a wing and a prayer last night at Indiana university

auditorium.

Ferruccio Tagliavini, originally scheduled to sing the role of Pinkerton,

was on sick call with influenza, Even his substitute, Richard from sore throat and slight fever when he came on stage Danisa Ilitsch, Czechoslovakian soprano who sang the “Butterfly” role for the first time in America last night, also had a cold, according to report. Miss Ilitsch substituted for Licia Albanese, whose throat condition necessitates a rest of some months, To opera singers, all these melancholy circumstances are perhaps more tragic than the events of Puccini's outdated melange of Japanese and American culture, which are explained by singers using the Itallan language.

Add Confusing Item

An added confusing item is the setting of the. opera, Nagasaki, which underwent possibly a more thorough lesson in the niceties of super~civilized warfare in 1945 than did Hiroshima. The worst fly in the butter of “Butterfly” is the fact that the opera is obsolete. It belongs to the era of David Belasco (grey mane, reversed collar), who wrote the play based on John Luther Long's book.

Puccini's music, often good, as in |*

the fugal passages for orchestra in the introductions to Acts I and II, is right up the Ethelbert Nevin alley in the pretty-pretty spots. It's

Tucker, reportedly was suffering

uneven, with copious-borrowing of musical ideas current in the early 1000's, such as the echoes of Wagner and Debussy.

Old-Fashioned Comedy Early in the opera somebody remarked that the stage proceedings resembled an old-fashioned musical comedy ‘trying to be cute like “The Mikado.” The mangy, beat-up old set for the interior of Clo-Cio-San's house in Acts II and III made the show look like an illustration in the 1912 Victor Book of the Opera. Now for the voices. In' the dry, bracing, Arizona-like climate of Indiana in April, it would; scarcely be fair to ride the singers. Miss Ilitsch is more Impressive vocally than histrionically. She has some fine tones, and I'd like to hear her under more favorable circumstances. In appearance, she is about as close an approximation to a mere slip of a Jap lass as ample Elizabeth Rethberg, who used to sing the role. Strikes Against Him Her acting in “Butterfly” erred on the side of cuteness, What drew laughs from last night's audience was the way she mauled and manhandled §-year-old Nancy Hame-

ters, who patiently played the role of “Trouble,” Cio-Cio-San’s child. Nancy, puzzled by so much demon-

smiled with pleased relief when John Brownlée (singing U. S. Consul Sharpless) picked her up in his arms. Mr. Brownlee, incidentally, was Pinkerton. Any star in an Italian lopera who is required to portray a character named Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton has too many strikes against him. Mr. Tucker was evidently working under a strain— the sort of strain where thep high notes will come out all right, at fearful cost later. Last night's performance was a test of his endurance, not of his voice, which would have to be heard under the conditions best for him.

ception of Osie Hawkins, who did a | sort of Ezio Pinza business as the! uncle-priest, Miss drowning seemed the- most satisfactory trouper. A colleague from The Times described the performance as “terrible.” I would agree, with some reservations. Butterfly needs retiring or re-writing. And since there's not too much you could'Salvage, by the
