orchestral background. The flip is another sentimental ballad “Stella by Starlight.” Introduces Singi M-G-M introduces its new singing star, Art Lund, who recently broke with Benny Goodman, on the nostalgic French tune. It's easily one of his best recordings to date. A third and slightly different version is offered by Frankie Laine (Mercury). Frankie tones down his usually torrid style and sings straight melody on “Mam’selle.” The second side is the old favorite, “All of Me.” Another tune with a faint touch of Gay Paree which, strangely enough, hasn't moved into the bestseller brackets yet, is Dinah Shore's recording of “My Bel Ami.” The tune, from the movie “Affairs of Bel Ami,” is a combination of pensive and clever lyrics with -a beautiful tune. Add Miss Shore as a chanteuse and what more could a record buyer want? Other good discs in the new releases include: DECCA — The Andrews sisters swing back into Calypso rhythm reminiscent of their famed “Rum and Coca-Cola,” the new record, “His Feet Too Big for De Bed.” Also calypso is the flip, “Jack, Jack, Jack.” " H Carmichael sings his own “Doctof, Lawyer, Indian Chief” on one side of a new wax and “Shhh, the Old Man's Sleeping,” on_ the reverse. MERCURY-—The more I hear the other crooners the more I like Tony Martin, His mellow style is just right on a sentimental tune “Dreams Are a Dime a Dozen,” and “I Miss That Feeling.” . Jose Melis takes a copy "of Mozart's “Turkish March,” a piano and out comes “Keyboard Vapers.” Melis and his Latin American ensemble back this tune with their own version of “Stardust.” Mercury is going all out featuring

mental ballad, “I Met Her by the, River St. Marie.” The singer is a top favorite on the West coast but little known around Indiana to date. Mercury also offers a variety of recordings of Italian and Mexican folk tunes in the recent shipments. Something else a little different is a series of old folk dance tunes such as the “Paul Jones,” “St. Paul Waltz,” “Village Tavern Polka” and “Red Handkerchief,” by Loule and His Old Time Band. CAPITOL—Jo Stafford departs from her usual style and goes almost’ bluesy, in her recording of “Sunday Kind of Love.” The second side features Songstress Stafford on “Ivy,” a Hoagy Carmichael tune written as background score for a new whodunit thriller, “Ivy.” Stan Kenton spotlights June Christy and tenor saxman Vido Musso on “Across the Alley From the Alamo,” a novelty tune from the pen of Joe Greene; composer of “And Her .Tears Flowed Like Wine.” The Musso passages are rare, set out against full band orchestration. The second side features the Pastels singing group on “There Is No Greater Love.” The combination of the two songs is the same as on the Woody Herinan version (Columbia), Andy Russell and his wife, Della, sing to each other on the waxing of “Unless It Can Happen to You.” The reverse features Andy soloing on “Dreams Are a Dime a Dozen.” The fast climbing “Midnight Masquerade” gets the Alvino Rey treatment, with vocals by Jo Anne Ryan and Blue Reys. The second side Is “Mama Blues,” a semi-blues tune featuring electric guitar and spoken comments by Bill Young in lieu of vocals. Also. along the blues line, Jesse Price records “You Can't Take It With You,” and “Big Town Blues.’

Tony Martin Signs Record Contract
Crooner fo Sing For RCA-Victor
Tony Martin, who opened with his own radio show recently,, has signed a recording contract vith RCA-Victor, It's another step up for the crooner who staged a comeback from the “has been” statys.
Louis Jordan has been presented a gold record, in. recognition that his recording of “Choo Choo Boogie” topped the one million sales mark. It's his first gold record, but the records show four other of his discs are already past the 700,000 mark, giving him an outside chance for a couple more,
Gay 90's singer Joe Howard, who's about 79 years young, sings as lustily as ever in “Gay 90's Revue,” an album of oldtime tunes | (DeLuxe), Tunes include, “I Wonder Who's ‘Kissing Her Now,” “Goodby, My Lady Love,” “Lets Take a Ride on a Rocket.”

phony Orchestra of New York, with Artur Rodzinski conducting. (Columbia, M-665, four 12-inch records.) For those — and they are many-—who find difficulty in under standing and appreciating his iconoclastic musical idiom, we must quote the famous remark that” Sibelius once made, that whereas other composers served the public all sorts of musical cocktails, he offered it only a drink of cool water, The true Sibelius fan will rejoice in getting such a good, new recording of perhaps the least well-known of the master’s seven symphonies; but others may find this work too terse and somber, too musically economical for their liking. DUMAS: THE THREE MUSKETEERS, adapted and directed by Ralph Rose, played by Errol Flynn and supporting cast, with orchestra conducted by Carmen Dragon, (Columbia, M-659, four 12-inch records.) That sword-totin’ hero of so many blood-and-thunder movies, Errol Flynn, makes: his recording debut as the young rookie Musketeer, D’Artagnan. In dramatic fashion he narrates the adventures of his three buddies, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and himself in the affair of the Queen’s diamond necklace, He is backed by a rousing musical score and a large supporting cast, and the result is hair-raising, spine-tingling action. Newest Discs Range From. 1a0 Fourth to ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’
Variety is the word for the assortment of recordings selected for review today. From Sibelius’ Fourth to “Pop Goes the Weasel” is a long, long way In music, and from Dumas’ “Three Musketeers” to “Little Red Riding Hood” i$ quite a distance in drama, if we may use that term. But the record-makers encompass such extremes with ease as they range far and wide in their search for things to impress on their black

The Carnegie Pops is the summer edition of the New-York Philharmonic, They play ‘with skill and wit these hilarious tions of that timeless American te, “Pop Goes ‘The Weasel.” RED RIDING HOOD, narrated by David Allen, with incidental music composed and conducted by Curtis Biever. (Columbia, two 10-inch records.) Allen's warm and colorful narration gives the familiar story some new dramatic values, while the musical accompaniment constitutes no ordinary “sound effécts” but forms a charming little orchestral suite. THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN, narrated by Gene Kelly, with orchestral acompaniment composed and conducted by Leham Engel. (Columbia, J-34, two 10-inch rece ords.) Another of the popular chil. dren's albums, containing Robert Browning’s immortal poem. It tells the story of how the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin of its plague of rats, then lured away the children.
