Christianson and Estelle Svboda of Chicago, the leaders. On her return to Indianapolis today, Sally Twyford praised the consistency of her teammates which gave them the lead in thrée events at the tournament. She ‘said observers in Grand Rapids believed the Comets’ lead in the team event would stand up against later attacks and that Eva williamson and Gertrude Bradley have good chances of preserving the top spots in the singles and allevents, respectively. Mrs, Twyford said it was fortunate that the Comets’ sponsor, Paul Crosier, didn't make the trip. “Undoubtedly he ‘would have swallowed

the meet. 4 If your average is under 186 and you want to take a whirl at this popular event, call Dick Norholt or Pete Ernst at the West Side. That spring weather of yesterday was evidently the tonic needed for silver-haired Charlie Cray, “grandpappy” of local bowlers, for in his Reformed Church league appearance at Pritchett’s last night, he fell sever. pins short of entering the season's 700-club. In action with First Reformed, Charlie had 265, 233, 195—693, easlily enough for city-wide solo hon- | ors. His closest competitor was Ken Bogard, who had 224, 246, 202—672 for Teeth in the Lions Club session at the Antlers. Henry Tegeler with 201, 237, 219— 857 for Cubs in the Evangelical Church league at Pritchett's and Bill Pearson with 236, 174, 243—853

Jim Jeffries Celebrates 72d Birthday; Admits Joe Louis Is a Good Fighter

BURBANK, Cal, April 15 (U.P). Jim Jeffries, still a giant of a man, celebrated his 72d birthday today by - reminiscing about old time fighters-who were in the ring when he. was world's heavyweight champlon. Champion Joe Louis is a “good fighter,” Jeffries admitted, but he thought Gentleman “Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons or John L. Sullivan would.give Louis a good tussle and might even win. But ‘outside of Louis, the old battler didn't think too highly of the present crop of fighters. They don’t train enough or do enough roadwork. Big Jim weighs 230 pounds, about 30 pounds more than when he won the heavyweight title from Fitzsimmons -in 1899. Until his retirement in 1904, he met all comers successfully.

When he had a tooth: pulled recently, Jeffries was reminded of his fight with Sailor Tom Sharkey. That tooth was cracked by Sharkey

but it seemed to knit together and |

service until it was his general

gdve him yanked to improve héalth. “I'm far from well, but I recovered from a stroke I suffered 15 months ago so I can get around,” the 6-foot, 2-inch Jeffries said.

“I smoke about eight cigars a day. They probably don’t do me any good, but I get lonesome at times and puffing a cigar is a good way to pass the time.” About 200 friends, dropped In on him Sunday for an early birthday celebration. Among his visitors was former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey. Most of his days, though, he spends quietly, When he retired in

1804, he bought A° 146-acre ranch, but. most of it since has been subivi so that only 13 acres are eft. “I raise a little hell on it and that's about all,” Jeffries said. “A lot I sold recently brought.almost as much as what I originally paid for the ranch.” In the * Jeffries barn, amateur fights gre-held each Thursday inght, but the ex-champion has attended only ‘half a dozen of them during the last year.
