Truman Tasy to Beat’

| 3500 Chairmen " Quizzed in Survey

OMYCAGO, April 4 (U. P)— Grass-root leaders of the Republiean party believe President Truman would be one of the easiest Democrate to defeat in the 1048 Presidential election, a survey by the magazine, the Republican, showed today. Ge 3 At least three other possible Democratic candidates would be more difficult to defeat, according / %0 the survey, They are Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Secretary of State George ©. Marshall and Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia. The opinion survey was conducted among 3500 Republican county. chairmen. Of six possible Democratic candidates listed in the poll, only Supreme Court Justice William * ©. Douglas and Henry Wallace were regarded as easier competition than Mr. Truman. Only 18 per cent ¢f the Republiean county chairmen said they thought Mr. Truman would be diffieult to defeat. In a similar poll conducted by the magasine a year 8go, 25 per cent of the G. O. P. leaders thought the President would provide stiff oppagition. Hard to Beat 3 Years Age ! Two years ago, TI per cent thought he would be hard to beat. In the present survey, nearly 69 per cent thought Mr. Truman would be easy to defeat, while 13 per cent were undecided. , “The larger segment which currently thinks Mr, Truman would be easy to defeat represents nearly five times as much optimism as was visible in the poll conducted year before last,” said C. M. Oehler, public opinion analyst who made the survey. Forty-nine per cent of the grass root leaders in the present poll thought it would be hard to defeat Gen. Eisenhower, and nearly 42 per cent thought Mr. Marshall would be a strong Democratic candidate: Twenty-eight per cent thought it oul be difficult to beat Senator

. Dr. Harry B. Crull, dean of Park college, Parkville, Mo, has been appointed head of the Butler university department of mathematics effective Sept. 1, President M. O. Ross of Butler announced today. A graduate of the University of Nlinois, Dr. Crull received his Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1930, his’ Master of Arts degree in 1931, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1933. He majored in mathematics and minored in astronomy. From 1933 to 1934 Dr. Crull was a lecturer at the famous Adler Blanetarium in Chicago and the following years was made professor of mathematics at Park college. He also served as assistant director of Grif fith Observatory in Los Angeles, and assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Southern California. He was released from active service in the navy with a rank of lieutenant commander. -
