Civic Presents A First Rate 'Whodunit'

By HENRY

Soci “Laure” for th Tet tne at the Civic was AESSUBIRG OFA

experience.

There Was the fhicination of the play itself fine piece of work, with beautiful balance between brittleness and tenderness Tere was also the delighted and grateful admiration for the Otvie

company in their excellent performance.

That play is difficult. Last night

at the opening, it went off with|

first-rate professional ease and timing.

Everybody's who's seen the film has the jump on me; so Ill with this warning: The plot requires from the audience what I believe Oojeridge called “that willing suspension of disbelief.” You take the plot or you leave it, as in many other expertly written whodunits, Curtain rises on Mark McPher~ son, detective, investigating the mysterious murder of Laura Hunt fn her New York apartment (fine set, warmly applauded). From the janitor’s (jon and from Laura's suitors, McPherson learns things about Laura. He falls enamored of the supposed deceased. Expertly Handled Then Laura appears. It wasn't she whose body, with the face destroyed: by BB shot from a sawedoff shotgun, had been found. The remainder of the plot is a tangle of possible motives, painfully obvious jealousies, all expertly handled in the writing. While you may suspect the guilty one early in the play, you're not too sure about the motivation, and that's where some of the best drams comes in. Now's the time, since space is short, for individual credits. Emily Macnab as Laura had the difficult task of seeming both innocent and guilty, besides being charming. In a role that could be over-dominant, she had the good trouper’s sense of

Best Performance

I think the best performance was that of Charles Dosth as the episurean, phrase-coining colyumist, Waldo Lydecker. Last seen at the Civie in “Foolish Notion,” Mr. Dosch

ation of a puzzled adolescent), Ruth Black as Danny's jealous and bitterly disappointed mother, and Helen Morton as Bessie Clary, who as Laura's devotéd cook brings the other characters’ ‘talk down to earth —all deserve praise. But.th® Civic's “Laura” is not just individual performahces. Director Jack Hatfield has made ‘the Vera Caspary-Gieorge Sklar play a cooperative undertaking in the best repertory theater tradition. Last night's capacity audience loved it. Others will have a chance to see it through next Thursday, according to schedule, although I'll bet they'll run an extra night or 80. |
