" panfish, it is hoped, will result in thinning out these species and give the remaining fish more food and a chance to attain normal size.

Based on Surveys

The extension of the open season is based upon recommendations by Dr. William Ricker director of the Indiana Iake and Stream Survey, who has been engaged in scientific studies of Indiana’s lake and stream fishing for a number of years. His studies, sponsored by the conservation department and Indiana university, are carried on with a staff of assistants. “Most fish, he maintains, die of and |old age or from other natural causes.”

Anglers Aided Study Hoosier anglers have been aiding this study of food conditions in various lakes and streams over a period of years through a plan originated by the late Dr. Will Scott of the I. U. faculty who

Permitting the angler to keep panfish which are undersize, less than 5 inches long, would serve a double purpose, in his opinion. It would mean the removal of a lot’ more fish than will be taken otherwise and will eliminate the killing of undersize. fish by anglers who want tO obey the law but do not know how to remove the hook without serious injury to the fish, he ted ;

Is One-Year Test Conservation officials specify that

ly. A favorable result may lead to elimination of the closed season entirely next year. The closed season originated as a means of protecting the game fish during their spawing season and has been a controversial subject ever since. Since spawning is governed by the temperature of the water, it changes from year to year. Each year reports are received that anglers during April take fish filled with eggs and that opening of the season on June 18 frequently finds fish still on the nests in the
