On 'Henry V' Movie Held Either
Best or Worst'
By SEXSON E. HUMPHREYS Indianapolis moviegoers who see
are likely to think it either the best motion picture they ever saw or the worst. That has been the previous experience regarding the much-dis-cussed British-made adaptation of the Shakespearean play. It earhs
“Henry V” starts a two-week en-
I saw the premiere of the film in May 1945, That was at Perugia, taly, an important wartime come British troops. - The film was first shown there as a tribute to the British 8th army. Some few Americans sneaked in by the courtesy of our allies, Crowd Takes a Walk
The crowd was mine-run, the sort that might have been found in any movie presented by the British army. Some men walked out before the first reel was over. By the middle of the film, half the crowd had melted away. The men who left were clearly bored. They said they had never seen such a dull film. The other half of us stayed

through the entire film. We were the ones who went back to billets with superlatives on our lips. Most of the praise, of course, was for Laurence Olivier. who plays the title role. His 12-minute soliloquy while walking through the British
the battle of Agincourt is the finest piece of acting I have ever seen— even if it was an “also ran” for an Oscar, First of Its Kind But there were forceful words of praise also for the courage of the producers, including Mr. Olivier, who dared to make the first attempt to transmit a full-length Shakespearean drama to the screen. The process is done very cleverly, first by the medium of a ‘pretended performance in a model of the old “Globe” theater, then gradually abandoning this device. The scenes in France are filmed in complete forgetfulness of the tions of the stage, permitting # battle scene that would have made proud. The whole is done in a Technicolor perfection is probabl , however, that a Bu proportion of the Indianapolis audience will see “Henry V” through—one rarely walks out on a show after paying from $1.20 ‘to $240 to see it. | The soldier audience al Perugia |

Times State Service BLOOMINGTON, Ind, April 11. — Paniza Ilitsch, Yugoslav dramatic soprano, will replace Licia Albanese in the title role of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Madame Butterfly” at Indiana university auditorium Tuesday evening. Miss Albanese, suffering from 2 throat infection, has been ordered by physicians to take a six months’ rest. Miss Ilitsch, who made her Amer- | ican debut with the Metropolitan | this season, received warm critical acclaim. i Actively associated with the Austrian underground movement be- } ginning in 1942, Miss Tlitsch became a political prisoner of the Nazis in 1944.
