Tomorrow. it will be more of the .same with .the first. bout scheduled for 3 p. m, while Wednesday the windup gets under way about 7 p. m. with teams from the west coast, middle east, south and east ready for the opening bell, the apnual carnival of clout is expected to break the attendance record of 24.677 and the gate receipts of $49,45% that were set during the tournament last year.
One Defending Champ
Leo Kelley, a former sailor from! Pittsburgh, will be the only defend- | ing champion. He won the 126pound class last year. However, teams from Hawaii and the U. 8. marine base at Cherry Point, N..C,, wil be om hand to battle the other associations for the team prizes which they eaptured last year, Especially strong are the Hawalians who took home three crowns in 1946 and have invited the 32 American semi-finalists to visit them in May and participate in an island tournament. If 32 Americans fail to reach the semifinals, sufficient outstanting boxers |, will be picked at the ringside to make up a delegation that will sail for Hawaii from San Francisco May 186,

‘Track Applies
For Work Permit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. April 7 (U. P.).—Churchill Downs race track has applied for a federal permit to continue some recently halted construction, preparatory to handling an expected ‘record-breaking Kentucky Derby day crowd, it was announced today. Marcus Greer, district construetion office manager for the Office of the Housing Expediter, said the Downs filed application in Washington but asked only that construction be permitted so there would be no “hazardous condition” remaining. The OHE, formerly the Civilian Production Administration, halted work March 31, on construction of 2000 terrace seats and reinforcement of the press room because its officials had no permit.

Takes Coveted Masters Title AUGUSTA, Ga., April 7 (U. P.).
| ~Happy-go-luéky Jimmy Demaret | headed home for Texas today with
perhaps the most coveted title of golf in his pocket—the Masters— and never had it been won more easily. Demaret started the final round on 8 hot but windy Easter Sunday three strokes ahead of the field,
| scored a one-under par 71 and sat back and waited without worry to)
see if anyone could better his 281 for 72 holes, seven strokes below |
son, coming out of virtual retirement from. golf, and the husky! amateur from Toledo, Frank Stranahan, made noble efforts. } Best Amateur Total
Stranahan, who made the best score ever posted by an amateur in the 11th annual event founded by Bobby Jones, had a 283 with a 68 yesterday to tie Nelson for seeond place. Stranahan had three birdies in five holes on the back nine but didn’t have quite enough to clip Demaret at the wire. But the main effort to head off Demaret had already fizzled — the bid by Australian Jim Ferrier, who actually drew abreast of Demaret at the eighth hole. Ferrier shot four birdies and four pars to that point, overcoming the four-stroke advantage Demaret had held ahead of him in the third round, but coming up to nine for the turn he developed the jitters. As large part of the crowd of 12,000 was there to cheer him on at the ninth hole but Ferrier went one over par on that one and blew completely apart on the back stretch, winding up with oldtimer Henry Picard at 286.
Pockets $2500
Demaret picked up $2500, but more than money is at stake in the Masters, the one event that brings out all the great names in golf. For Demaret it was his second victory in the classic. He won with 280 in 1940, beating Lloyd Mangrum, present U. 8. Open champ, by four strokes. Ben Hogan, who won the most swag last year, but has slumped in the face of Demaret’s red-hot performance since New Year's, wound up in a' 284 tie with Harold (Jug) McSpaden.

Too Much Speed Spills Chitwood
DALLAS, Tex., April 7 (U. P)— Joe Chitwood, a daredevil racing driver who has been in the money four times in the annual 500-mile race at Indianapolis, was convinced today that there are times when too much speed has its drawbacks. Chitwood, now appearing in a thrill show as driver of a hurdling automobile, gave his car. too much throttle yesterday at Arlington Downs and it overjumped the landing ramp 145 feet from the takeoff point and overturned on him. Hospital attendants sdid a severe chin laceration and bruises were the extent of his injuries and that he had left after emergeficy treatment. The stunt is virtually the same that was fatal to Lucky Teter at the Indiana state fairgrounds at Indianapolis on July 5, 1042.
