Students Will Present Pageant
Music Educators To Hear Program
By BOBBIE SCHAEFFER
APPROXIMATELY 3000 musie teachers will see Indiana teensters in action at the North Central Musie Educators’ conference which opens here Wednesday. “Indianapolis night” on Wednesday is to be the highlight of the our-day conference, with 1230 city igh schools entertaining. Ten states will be represented at the teachers’ gathering, to be held here for the first time since 1935. The choirs of all seven high schools will join for the opening night program. And the combined girls’ glee clubs and the orchestras of the schools will perform. The choir will have 480 voices, the glee club 494, and the orchestra 256 participants. An orchestra of faculty members will accompany the singing groups. A few teensters, advanced in music, will be included in this group.
~ » ” THE EXTRAVAGANZA will be presented in Technical high school's gymnasium and the hosts to the conference are buzzing with plans. Ralph W. Wright, in charge of publie school music, is to be director of the combined groups. He will conduct one huge rehearsal on Tuesday before the program. Gene Johnson, a Tech student, will be the narrator for the musical pageant, built on the theme “Patriotism and Religion in the Arts.” Speech choirs from Howe and Broad Ripple high schools will present poems and prose and there will be “living pictures” by stage classes
from Tech. 7
» » » 8TATE teensters will come to Indianapolis for the Friday night, April 11, performance for the teachers. Five hundred voices will sing in the Tech gymnasium and Don Cralg, assistant to Fred Waring, will come to direct the choir, An all-day rehearsal wili precede the program. The all-state orchestra will be directed by Thor Johnson, Cincinnati symphony orchestra conductor. Under the auspices of the Indiana State Choral Pestival association, the state singing groups represent all the schools in the state who are members of the group. Their annual performance is at the state teachers’ convention held here each October and this occasion is “extra.” A double quartet from each school is chosen to join the all-state chorus, and this small group must participate in a spring musical in its own town before singing with the large chorus. » » . NEXT THURSDAY afternoon a junior high and high school chorus of Indianapolis students will be directed by Miss Lila Belle Pitts of Columbia university. She will demonstrate that students can sing opera selections at sight. Miss Pitts is working with
educators on the opera appreciation. Students from the Jordan conservatory also will participate—to give the musical visitors still more
