Contacts Coaches On Prospects
CHICAGO, April 2 (U, P), =~ Ward (Piggy) Lambert, Purdue's basketball coach for 28 years, is using his wide friendship among college tutors to help the National basketball league, of which he is now ‘commissioner, obtain the pick of the 1947 college hardwood crop for the 1947-48 teams, Meanwhile the astute ex-Boiler-maker chieftain is attempting to
providing for draft of college stars in all future years. Lambert, to give his league an edge this year, contacted college coaches ‘nationwide to obtain. tips
on the best professional prospects in thdr territory. | Nearly 30 on List Ww all reports were in, he sent « list of nearly 30 names to
coaches of the National league, giving details about the youths and stating they had been recommended for the professional game. To (late, less than two weeks after the list was mailed, at least one of his selected prospects has signed to play for a National league
team. Lambert, in making his survey of the national crop of rookies, was
determined that the league should not break the regulation which prohibits professional teams negotiating with college players Having Intercollegiate eligibility remaining.
He's Optimistic Lambert was optimistic about an | agreement between his circuit, the ' Basketball Association of America and the American league for a draft of college players before the next season. “We had nearly reached agreement in January,” he said, “when the association said it. wished to postpone action until its season was ended.” Such an agreement would assign 8 college player to one team and prevent any other club in the three circuits from negotiating with him. However, an individual player would be able to sell his ability to any team outside the three leagues,

Canadian lcers Best U. S. Foes
By UNITED PRESS The Canadian representatives, which finished one-two in the National hockey league regular season, were out in front today in the Stanley cup semi-finals after Montreal dumped Boston last night, 5 to 1, while Toronto defeated Detroit, 4 to 1. Montreal, defending cup champion, leads the Bruins by three games to one im the best-four-of-seven series, while Toronto has a two-to-one edge over the Red Wings. Both winners were in control all the way last night, and the most exciting action happened in the penalty box at Detroit when a fan started a riot by slugging Gus Mortson of Toronto as the burly defenseman sat down 40 start a penalty. Mertson, whose 133 minutes in penalties topped the league during the season, had interfered with the wings’ Bill Quackenbush, who had to be helped off the ice, Mortson sat down and the fan grabbed him. Mortson fought back and other players joined the fray. Another fan threw a chair, and still another Detroit rooter jumped from a low balcony into the battle. Police finally stopped it and took four fans out of thie stadium.
