A six-day period of mourning be observed by: the miners for 111 victims of 'the Centralia, % Secretary of Interior J. A. Krug, perator of the government-held es, declined to challenge Mr. ewis’ right to call the unpreceSlented stoppage. ‘Ranking Relicans said congress would not ere. “At the same time, however, there ‘were signs that both congress and the executive branch of the government would take steps to improve mine safety. Mr. Krug issued a statement saying he would send the senate soon a report on overall safety conditions in Amerfean soft coal mines. Some Grumbling Heard Reports from the coal fields indicated some scattered grumbling , 8 the loss of several days’ wages, but even the grumblers were ready $0 heed Mr. Lewis’ call. A government official said coal production this week would have been less than half of normal even without the stoppage. 5 ! Tomorrow is a traditional mine holiday, celebrating establishment of the 8-hour day. In addition, '¥ many miners stay off Holy Thursday. and Good Friday. Absenteeism usually runs high on the Saturday before Easter. Wednesday would have been the only-day of full production.
