made an independent . agency to cope with American Communists.
Earlier, Governor Kim Sigler of Michigan charged that the American Communists are trying to take over the labor unions as a prelude to an effort to overthrow the U. 8. government.
Ruled by Moscow
Mr, Bigler's statement was made as Chairman Thomas said he had “definite proof’ that the American Communist party is directed from Moscow,
He declinied to elaborate on the nature of his evidence. : He charged that former U. A. W. President R. J. Thomas, now a union vice president, is a “captive” of the Communist party of the United States, : * “This, in union parlance,” he said,’ “means that they follow the Communist party line in union activities.” Eg He also included in this category George Addes, secretary-treasurer of the auto union, and Richard T. Leonard, national director of ' the Ford department of the U. A. W. Sigler said Thomas recently had tried to bring about the dismissal lof a “very prominent C. I. O. leader" simply because he was “an out- | spoken, two-fisted opponent of Communism.” Withholds Name
Sigler declined to name the C. I. O. leader allegedly singled out by Thomas. He said he did not want to destroy the man’s usefulness in the anti-Communist fight. Sigler released a list of organizations which he said were “front” groups active in Michigan. “No one,” he said, “should be duped by the “high-sounding purposes and innocent names of the Communist front organizations.” He sald there is no question that the Communist is “attempting to raise his ugly head” in Michigan colleges. Sigler said. there were many “fearless and. stalwart” labor leaders attempting to stem the spread of communism. :
