trategic Importance Mr. Patterson declared that no where in the world could the United States make a more important militery investment than at the Dardanelles and the eastern Mediterranean. “My opinion,” Mr, Patterson said, “is that the area is of strategic importance and great valug. Money spent in that area will not be misdirected.” Mr. Patterson's testimony eoin¢ided with a preview from Turkey of what that governemnt plans to do with the American subvention, A dispatch from Ankara said that already word of the American plans had strengthened the government grestly and had weakened opposition elements.

Questioned Judgment
Mrs. Mendenhall. She was fired by Mr. Wooden after she questioned His judgment in removing five children from a foster home Without investigation or conditioning of the children.
Her investigation showed that the removal was based solely on a let ter saying a newspaper planned an expose of the Boone county home. She went to the newspaper editor involved and several other persons said to be interested only to learn the rumors were unfounded and there was no reason for the removal. In eross examination in the Mendenhall hearing the qualifications of both Mr. Wooden and Mr. Christy for the posts were Questioned. )
18th en List of 14
Miss Jessie Levy, attorney for the discharged worker, breught out that Mr. Wooden was 13th on a list of 14 candidates who took merit examinations for the director's post. It was learned later the federal government refuses to eontribute their share of the salary of Marion county's director, because his appointment has never been approved by the personnel board, (Although Mr. Wooden actually did pass 15th, the field was later narrowed down when the top candidates declined ta take the job, and the hoard ruled out two women candidates.) Miss Levy also asked Mr. Christy what his qualifications were for holding the post of “executive administrative assistant,” asking his previous welfare experience. He replied that he had “none with an accredited agency.”
“Well, with what ‘“unaccpédited’|,
welfare agency have you served?” she asked. His answer was “None.” He added, however, that he had been a captain in the army, where he had eontact with welfare problems. He was pilot on an observa tion plane in the field artillery.
